Proximity to U/C lounge would be my best guess. That gate is primarily used by EVA Air 747-400 Combi during the day, EVA also use the VS U/C lounge.

Prior to the Sydney service VS used stand S21 on arrival, this is very close to the immigration/customs area.

Due to the length of the A346, it is restricted to certain gates to prevent the tail pertruding out onto the taxi way. Im pretty sure that'll be the reason why the same gate is used at HKG.

Sorry vrocking but CLK was built with long parking bays, most can accept the A346, most bays used for CX/SAA/China Southern/VS A346. The reason is as detailed above!!!
