On our last flight a few weeks ago (MAN to MCO and back in PE), people were boarding with 2 and 3 large carry on bags - the sort you would expect to be checked in. The crew took several and stored them in a 'cupboard' at the back of the upper deck and let the passengers go back and forth if the wanted stuff from them during the flight.

They didn't seem to care how much you carried on or what it weighed. In fact no one at any point checked carry on size or weight.

VS seem to go in fits and starts over this. [:(] I have seen UC and PE pax at LHR scrambling about on the floor of check in, moving items from hand luggage to checked luggage becasue their hand luggage was overweight.

Other times, as Keith says, people seem to bring all but the kitchen sink on as hand luggage, bumping all the other pax with it as they walk down the aisle, and then expecting the crew to stow it for them. [:(!]

We're going to fly hand luggage only this weekend, but one of our bags is the regulation 22x14x9 and it is huge :> I'm guessing it will go in the cupboard. I did call Premier Team to check as whilst those are the bag dimensions if you add the wheels it gets bit bigger so wanted to check this. They seemed remarkably relaxed about it I'm pleased to say.

This is one of the bees in my personal bonnet. I travel extensively
(always in PE) and always travel hand baggage only (it's the
only way). In 4 years of travelling VS with just a carry-on,
I have only ever had my bag declared overweight once. I
was made to check it and it was broken into (in both
directions, no less). If I am ever overweight (in the bag
sense), it's only by a kg or so, nothing drastic. Sometimes
the checkin staff make a fuss over this, the majority of
the time they don't. Is there any rhyme or reason to this?
Is it operational or does it depend on what mood they're in?

What really bugs me though is that there is absolutely nothing
to stop me buying two bottles of vodka, a satnav system,
four books and a bottle of perfume in the departure lounge
and walking on with it. Together that lot would weigh
far more than my original carry on. Weighing it seems pointless
when I can blow it all away in the departure lounge, doesn't
it?
