Leander Club sprints to head of the class

In 1851, the British and American boatsmen left their cannons home but began a sporting rivalry on the water called the America's Cup, a sailing duel dominated by the United States for more than a century.

Yesterday, on a perfect Head of the Charles afternoon, the Leander Club from Great Britain defeated the US entry from Northeastern University, Cambridge University (another British entry), and the vaunted Harvard eight crew in the new Row Jet Set, Row! event.
Leander reached high stroke counts down a straight 450-meter sprint course, much different from the 3-mile course for all the other races.
With new sponsor Virgin Atlantic having donated a trophy, the sprint injected a new level of head-to-head tension at the highest level of the sport, said Fred Schoch, executive director of the regatta. And the rowers agreed...
