Is the site remembering you when you come back to V-flyer or do you need to log in again? I thought the pop ups were only for non members? I've not seen the pop up until I tried using IE which doesn't log me in automatically.

You could also add the fully qualified domain name into your hosts file so it doesn't resolve to the correct IP. You'll get a blank window instead.

I understand why they have these ads, but if a site get it wrong (amount, type, who is advertising), I think it drives people away. It's a hard thing to get right, whilst making money to run the site.

Today is the first day that I've had pop ups appear. They don't appear on all pages, but they do appear when replying to posts (well they have for this one ironically) :)

Guys

The pop-up should be appearing infrequently, but as a few of you have mentioned that you are seeing it recurrently, we will take a look and see if it is being executed as intended.

Until the matter is resolved, please bear with us on this.

Please also remember that this sort of paid for advertising is one way of generating much needed revenue for V-Flyer, although at the same time we do not want to alienate or frustrate any members, regular or otherwise. Your constructive feedback is always welcomed and appreciated.

I too seem to be being pop up plagued today - it wasn't doing it yesterday - it is intrusive.

BTW Firefox 1.5

Strange how the pesky little bugger pops up in this thread all the time[:o)]

On the one habd I think its really cool that VA think its worthwhile advertising on this site......sure the administrators/creator must be proud. And it all bodes well for us when FA's and the like recognise members.

However i have seen the pop up now and taken in its message, so just once a day is enough[y]

Anyone with a website can subscribe to things like affiliate future and select one particular advertiser. I know VS use one of these schemes, can't remember which one just off the top of my head.

It may be that they are generating some income, but its pretty pointless if they're alienating the very people they're targeting. THEY ARE INFURIATING! I thought this site was a haven of common sense but it appears not on the subject of pop-ups. PLEASE REMOVE THEM![:(!]

It wasn't doing it as recently at 10am this morning - wonder if my pop-up stopper at home will block it? Am surprised it isn't blocked here at work...

OK guys,

Yes, we're all getting the popups. I initially thought it was infrequent (around 1 in 20), but on replying, I can see it is more intrusive than that.

We'll work on it - promise! Until then, however, please bear with us.

I'm not going to repeat the previous points around income for the site, etc - although it is a key issue. However, as others have mentioned, it should not be of detriment to our member's experience...

Sorry about that. I was out today and didn't realise I'd screwed up the code which displays the ad (which technically is an 'overlay', rather than a 'pop up', which spawns a new window). Anyways, for registered users, they're gone completely.

Pete

BTW, The sad fact is that the number of people who buy a membership kit are very much in the minority of the total number of users, so the site has to supplement its income.

Pete,

Why not put some V-Flyer T-shirts up for sale? You know the ones you guys all took to Vegas. I'd have one for sure. (just as long as I can have the Mcuth Size) Any other 'decent' merch ideas anyone else? As soon as you have re-done the V-Flyer book i'm down for one of those too (I know that may be a bit off yet)..

We could auction off HighFlyer's polo shirt from the event (one she took from me hasten to add), she'll even throw in a signed photo of her wearing it....

Thanks,
Richard

I'm gonna try to get a membership, but as I don't exactly have a credit card it's not the easiest thing possible.

Just an FYI,those shirts were made in the USA,dont know how much they would cost to produce in the UK and there was a min. order number, dont think we can ask Pete to buy 50 shirts then be stuck wearing 30 of them for the next couple of years.

The whole concept of site revenue is under a major review.

We like the idea of merchandise for the site, Pix has already got a few items. It is the old catch 22 though, we need to raise revenue to buy the items, to re-sell them at a profit.

Because if its extraordinary popularity [8D] the site is getting more costly to run. Advertising revenue is one way of covering some of the cost. The generosity of some users who have bought memberships and / or made donations covers some more of it, but we are looking to stop Pix having to prop up the site (which is enjoyed / used by an awful lot for people) from his own pocket.

As I say, things are happening, and we will endeavour to keep members informed.

Watch this space, as they say.

Maybe an annual renewal fee, or you drop down a level, or the ability to buy membership for other people?
