V-Flyer

Very loosely travel technology related, with loosly being the operative word. For one reason and another I need to sign up for a pop mail account. Those of you that have met me will know that there is no chance whatso ever that I will pay for this service though. I have signed up with "hotpop". Have I made an awful blunder?

Is there any reason you specifically need POP? If you can give a hint as to what mail you want to send/retrive and why, it might be easier to come up with a solution for you.

The advantage of POP is that once you have downloaded your messages you can disconnect from the net and read your email at your own pace - so less charges. There are loads of different protocols for mail, that i shall not bore you with now

I use GMail which has POP access. Its handy for me as i can forward my mail (to and from thta account) and keep a copy on the GMail server (as i am forever losing mail) Im not sure if this is the sort of thing you are after? Free email that has forwarding capabilities?

really just want to download my mail onto outlook on my PC or my PDA, then process it off line.

I agree GMail is probably your best bet, you should be able to just sign up for an account. If you can't PM me and I will send you an invite. There are no charges and as Sarah says POP is allowed too so you can check mail and work offline on your laptop.

Popmail is just like ordinary mail, but hipper and more trendy .

I have found this link by googling "gmail". If this is the right one, it seems to indicate it is just an experiment.

Its not an expirement. Just a easy way for google to keep a controlled growth on it by running it in beta for ages. It wont be going away thats for sure.

BTW Pop forwarding works great to my mobile phone, give it a go!

Give GMail a go Jeremy, trust me, its very good. I wasnt convinced at first, but now i have four accounts and a GMail virtual drive account, and its probably the best Internet mail account out there.

Its a cost effective solution for email - unless you happen to get a lot of spam!

You'll probably have SMTP/IMAP. With IMAP, your e-mail (and mail folders) are held and retrieved by your Internet server, and you only download the mail you choose. SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is used to deliver emails, not to send them.

I'd like to second the comments regarding Gmail. It really is a great service that is quick and easy to use, plus the storage space isn't half bad either

I joined Gmail this week and am very impressed. The GUI and service it much better then what I was about to pay for!!

I use my standard Email on my pda - which downloads to Outlook - i.e it is pop mail - and then I use http://www.mail2web.com to collect it - this is a great web site for picking up POP mail!!!

Other than those of you using corporate email, what type of mail service do you have? I am surprised but it would appear that some of you non corp users have something other than pop mail.

Plus.net have a pretty good email system, where you can access all your standard email accounts using either a web page or with the usual email programs.

When accessing your email using the web, the messages stay on the mail server but you can reply, forward or add attachments to the messages as with any email program.

In the dark days before broadband I had a pay as you go dial up account with onetel, this gave POP email. Then BB came along and I moved to another provider, but years later I still have my onetel POP email account functioning perfectly well. I guess they'll cut it off one day [:(!]

OK I am convinced on Gmail. But how do I sign up for it. I can't find any links that say anything other than "this is an experiement and has not been widely made available" and no sign up link. Do I need one of these invitations?

Thanks Sarah. I did realise it was something that was linked to outlook or the like (ah yes, used to read offline, in the good/bad old days before unmetered connection)- used to confuse the hell out of me when asked to input my POP settings - not a scooby! So - I stick with web-based mail now - for me, it works best. Apart from at work, where it's outlook and I have no choice anyway.

I've got gmail too - but to be honest, I've yet to see what all the fuss is really about. I'd be happy for someone to enlighten me though!!!!!!!!!
