las vegas strip

Does anyone know which side of the plane the LGW-LAS affords the best view of the strip on landing?

hi sit on the right hand side of the plane for best view of the strip as you come in to land and taxi along to the terminal

IIRC from the direct flights to LAS i have taken with VS its the left side of the plane! A fab view of the Luxor, MGM, Mandalay Bay, and that end of the strip as you land! Landing at LAS is awesome the first time you see it!

Maybe it depends on the routing taken?

When i have been to LAS on US internal flights from other cities its always been a nighttime landing, and you can see the neon from miles!

How many runways does LAS have? Anyone know?

On the several times i have flown the 43/44, i would swear i have always come in with the strip to my left. Not always the case with coming in on US internals though?

Both times I've flown in the Strip has been on the left side of the plane...

There is at least 2 at near right angles to each other, but even if there was just the one, wind direction would dictate which way you approach the runway.

Paul is right here, the wind makes the decision!!

I have had the pleasure of landing in both directions, unfortunately for me I swapped from the one-side to the other, I missed the view both times!! [V] Sums up my luck!!

just to confuse the issue even further[}:)]

If you are in the UCS the panaramic view out of ALL the windows opposite is fantastic, now would that be left or right, I think I was in 8A but the strip was behind me, on the way back I was poorly so it was a case of[|)]

Whenever I've flown in its always been on the Left.

Hope you're lucky on either trip but the best way to see the strip is to take a helicopter ride down - this is worth doing at day and at night - and then the next best think is go up the Stratospher Hotel tower, meet Jetwet, have a few beers, see the strip and then scare yourself sh1tless on the four rides - Dave will sort you out with the "front of house" seats and make sure you brown pant yourself!!

It was left side for me on both occasions. I also enjoyed looking down at the Grand Canyon on the first flight I took there, and on the latter (an internal from SFO) there were outstanding views of the desert with what looked like nuclear or chemical testing sites - pink and red colouration on the desert floor like someone had let off a giant paint bomb. You could also make out all sorts of runways and roads that had been left to turn back to desert. Fascinating. Only downside was that it was a bit of a bumpy ride due to all the mountains you have to go over. The views made up for it.

Most 747s from the UK land on runway 25R or 25L which both actually face the strip. The plane should taxi around to the right towards T2 so the best view will be from the left hand side of the plane as it makes it way to the gate. Even if you sit on the right hand side of the plane you will see some of the strip when on approach so either way you should catch a glimpse.

Mccarran actually has 4 runways, 25L + 25R, and 19L and 19R.

Ok,LAS has 4 runways,the dominant one for landing is 25L,this would mean a right hand seat would be better.

However if all all comes down to which way the wind is blowing,as 25 L/R are the longer of the pairs of runways these are the prefered ones to use.

However is the wind is coming out of the south chances are you will land on 1R,if out of the north 19L.

However again that can change on a min to min basis,if the wind speed is low enough they will switch back to 25L as again it is longer.

All in all best bet is the right hand side,though to be honest with the VS flight landing in the daytime there isnt that much to see,coming into the city at night is great,rolling in over the desert,fly over lake Mead,then over frenchmans mountain and the lights come on,pretty amazing.

Every time I have operated to Vegas we use different runways, however nearly always see Hoover dam to the left on approach if thats any good?

Ok, I know it's slightly off topic, but I have just finished reading The Money and the Power (The Making of Las Vegas and its Hold on America 1947 - 2000). If anyone is interested I would happily post it with the only stipulation being that once read it is similarly passed on.
