Good evening - apologies, I realise any sensible person should be able to work out the fare class system[i]... But I can't!

Are all premium economy fares upgradable, or are there restrictions?

Nope.

H (Virgin Holidays) and K ("original" Apex) are not upgradeable with miles, and *technically* not with cash, but we know they allow it on the day sometimes.

S (semi-flex) and W (Full Flex PE) are upgradeable with miles or cash. (Subject to a change fee on the S class ticket, that is).

(PS - You might want to check out the Fare Codes Page where all of the fare codes are listed entirely, upgrade restrictions and all ;))

I managed to upgrade a K fare for just the difference between the K [heavily discounted PE] & Z [heavily discounted UC] fare. They wanted to charge me a £100 change fee, but I pointed out that the rules on the two fares were basically the same & I was offering them more money to travel with the same restrictions, just a bit closer to the front of the plane. (Plus have a lot more £££ to lose if I did not subsequently travel).

The person I spoke to at Flying Club had to consult with someone else, then put me through to the "Upper Class team" who agreed to waive the £100 charge.

Dunno if the fact I am flying from MAN came into the equation, i.e. I am not going to cost VS a lot in terms of Clubhouse food / drink / haircuts etc that is not available at Manchester.
