Interlineing bags: America West and VS at LAS

Can I check in bags at SFO through to London with America West if I fly SFO-LAS with HP and LAS-LGW with VS ? Flights are on separate bookings.

I have checked bags through between America West and VS before but am not sure if
things have changed since the America West and US Airways merger. Also, I have only ever interlined bags between these airlines in SFO and LAX before but never at LAS where T2 is so separated from T1.

I used to be able to check my bags all the way through but since March the rules have changed and if they are separate bookings you must collect your bags and re-check at LAS regardless of the airline. Here's the link to the VS website.

It really is a bummer because it was great not to have to bother about collecting and re-checking if you had connecting flights
