Interesting statistics[y]
Ryan Air must be doing something right despite the seemingly constant bad press against them!

I'm sure the accountants amongst us can explain to me how comes Fedex comes top of the operating profits list but bottom of the profit margin list.
Are letters and parcels too demanding in their amenity pack requirements?;)

Virgin blue's profit was more than twice that of VS at $75M (ish)[:0]

Not an accountant but I assume it is to do with huge turnover that Fedex has. 7.2% gross profit on 1414$m represents a turnover of 1.963$Billion whereas the trio of cheap airlines Gol, Ryanair and Air Asia (interestingly representing one from each of three continents, S. America, Europe and Asia) have obviously mastered the art of maximising profits by holding on to a much larger share of their revenue.

I guess FedEx could be said to offer all their clients free transfer. :D.

The profit margin percentage is the telling indicator here (gross profit is just really a function of how big you are) - and looking at that list I would have thought VS were just bubbling under the 25th place in the same ball park as the likes of QF/BA/CX.

Interesting thing (OK - maybe only interesting to the irremediably sad)is how profitable Emirates are. They are the highest-ranked "full service, wide network" carrier there, and turn in a better percentage profit than a whole stack of low cost operators.

Admittedly the boundaries between Emirates and the UAE state is pretty blurred*, but EK have invested massively in a short space of time and to be seeing the returns already is good going.

*apparently I read the other day that Emirates have the same triple-A credit rating as the UAE itself - because the markets are 100% confident that the ruling family would bail the airline out with its own money than ever allow it to go bust! That must make raising commercial finance a lot cheaper and easier...
