upgrades at checkin

my nephew flew syd-lhr. lhr-syd and he said they were offering upgrades to PE for $199au at sydney check in.He said this was all the way to lhr but was not sure when i questioned more about it. I will be doing same route except for stopover syd-hkg. hkg-lhr. lhr-syd.if available when we fly i will be taking up the offer but i think it is $199 to hkg and then another amount at hkg check in, if its available.Does anybody know if they do offer upgrade and how much they normally ask hkg? As for upgrades in general, and paying for upgrades in particular, the short answer is that yes, sometimes VS will offer upgrades. For its premium flyers (Gold members of the Flying Club) these upgrades are sometimes offered for free. Upgrades sometimes cost more depending on in what fare basis your ticket was purchased.

For more information about the subject of upgrades, try using our V-Flyer Search feature (located on the menu at the top of the page). This is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the many topics we discuss in the various V-Flyer forums. For example, by entering "upgrades" and specifying the "General Discussion" forum, quite a few threads are returned and you can then browse each for some recent discussion on the subject of upgrades.

The fee of $199AUD would be for an 'On the day' Airport upgrade fee for SYD-HKG sector only. ISTBC but Check-in staff at SYD cannot offer an on the day upgrade price for HKG-LHR sector, these can only be offered by check-in staff for a flight departing from their station.

The Staff at SYD would only be able to re-issue your ticket to PE if you wanted to change HKG-LHR while in SYD, subject to what fare code your ticket is issued in.

You could chance your arm and take the airport upgrade of $199AUD but you would have to wait until you got to HKG to try for the HKG-LHR sector which would be risky if you definitely want to upgrade.

I am not entirely sure what HKG charge for their on the day upgrades, however I would suspect that it would be a good deal more than $199AUD offered from SYD-HKG. $199AUD is less than £100 which is a great deal. HKG to LHR would be somewhere around the £200-£250 mark I would guess....
