Really need your advice here people,

Wifey is off to Dubai TODAY flying UC booked through Virgin Holidays, last night when checking in I noticed that the name on her ticket was missing an E. Instead of Anne-Marie it is ticketed as Annmarie (you can't put hyphens on tickets). Do you guys think she will get away with this or will the 'jobsworths' get tricky?

I have not called Virgin yet as I do not want to start any 'procedures' unless really necessary.

Your input/experience would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of years back we had the same situation in a slightly more extreme fashion - ticketed as "Debbie", passport "Deborah" (my wife, that is, not I). Rang VH. Basically the message was "ok noted will tell VS go to the ticket desk at the airport they'll know all about it".

Well, of course, they didn't but they were as helpful as they could be. Took about 15 minutes for them to issue a new ticket.

I think, on balance, I might 'fess up as you might blag it this end but risk the same problem on the return when you're on foreign soil and may have less of a support network.

For some reason I've always had it in my head that you are allowed up to three characters that are wrong between a ticket and passport. I don't have a source for this, just remember hearing this once.

My company's travel agent in Korea has never yet got my {FamilyName}/{GivenName} combination the right way round. (something to do with the Korean/Chinese naming convention of their family name being put first in normal use).

It's never yet caused me any more problems than a double take at my passport by any checkers.... and then I end being called Mr{GivenName} on the flight.

I admit though I've never had to see if it is equally overlooked in the UK, as I book ex UK flights myself.

My wife used to have the same problem with her Vietnamese name - written as {Family Name}{GivenName}. Of course the name was never actually wrong and could be easily transposed based on her passport.

I often have tickets made out to 'Phil' although my passport is 'Philip' and this has never caused a problem. I think in this case safe might be the best policy.

I contacted premier team and VH, both of them said it would be OK to travel on a ticket with a one letter mistake.

Wifey was panicing that she would miss GITEX and I was panicing she would have to stay at home and mess up my 7 day beer and curry festival!!

Glad to hear you got it sorted, Mark. These issues were probably treated more severely just after 9/11. Back then I remember our travel agent at work saying something like all names had to be spelled versus using initials (P. Thompson would be unacceptable) and if someone was a "Jr." that information had to be on the ticket. Today I believe the ticketed name must match the name (and face!) on the picture ID.

Hope all was resolved.

Recently I couldn't use OLCI to check in my mother, because dad had managed to attach her middle intial to first name, so search was looking for Mollie, when it should have been looking for Molliel.
Agent on the phone identified the issue and gave no further comment, so we assumed it would not be an issue at the aiport and it wasn't.
