I know many of you have flown to JNB - come to that, so have I. In fact my first VS flight was to that destination, albeit in economy. However at that stage - and all other stages my final destination was JNB but this time I need to go on to Durban

I talked to the Premier Team this afternoon. The girl, I spoke to, while good enough wasn't really up to the highest standards I have come to expect from the Premier Team. For example, she told me that VS do not fly to Cape Town on Fridays even though I had the VS website in front of me which said they did. Equally she told me there were no Z fares on the date I wanted to travel while the website told me there were. I later found that I had drawn the short straw and she was due off duty in ten minutes time and was off for the weekend. The last thing she wanted was someone with a complicated itinerary - and if she but knew it I had a couple of queries around other booked flights but decided that discretion was the better part of valour and left them to some other date.

What I was finding was that the fare that was being quoted to DUR was £1000 more than the published Z fare to JNB and if you convert that to euros, well..... It transpired that when quoting the onward fare the Z morphed into a D fare which is of no earthly use to me and £1000 seems excessive for two trips lasting about one hour and which probably cost one tenth of that amount. The upshot is that I have a Z fare on hold till 9pm tomorrow, Saturday while I see if I can book flights myself on SAA. I have looked on the SAA website and there are plenty of choices out of JNB (but not so many out of CPT - I preferred the departure time of the CPT flight) albeit not in the lowest bucket but at prices that make business class seem attractive [:w]

My question is how much time should I leave between arrival in JNB and departure to DUR if my luggage is not thru-checked? What time does check-in open at JNB and what time does the Clubhouse open so that I can schedule my flight from DUR?

Thanks in advance for your replies

Yeah, I had what sounded like a bit of a 'duffer' on Premier earlier this week too. Just wasn't the usual service I think we've grown to expect.

I'd leave yourself about 2 hours. I remember it taking about 45-50 minutes or so from getting off the plane to having luggage and being outside customs, though that was from the back of the bus.

JNB-DUR-JNB: used to do that route monthly in my younger years on the now defunct/SAA buy-up Flitestar which could compete with even the best of airlines for service.

I digress[:I] Anyway, I'd probably leave at least 2 hours if I were you. Plane to out the terminal usually takes 40 minutes, then there's a five minute walk to Domestic; that leaves you just over an hour to play with.

Thanks, guys. I decided to play safe and booked myself on to a flight that leaves at around 10:00am - I'm of the "better to be 2 hours early..." school of travel. [ii]

Does anyone know if there are any shower facilities in JNB while i wait?

There is a VS arrivals lounge, but I don't know of anything from departures.

Hi H.L

The VS checkin opens 3 hours before the flight and has long queues waiting for it to open, they are normally very good in helping UC paxs to check in if you arrive early(within reason).

The Clubhouse opens 3 hours prior to the flight as well, however if you manage to get through check in early go and bang on the door of the CH and there will be someone there to let you in. If a certain 'smiley' waiter is on duty you will have a glass of fizz in your hands before you know it and it will never get less than half empty! The food at JNB CH is excellent and some rather palatable reds are on offer.... Enjoy
