According to the VS website, if you depart from the USA in UC, you are allowed one item of cabin baggage [within the "permitted size] plus a personal item, such as a laptop or briefcase.

I am thinking about taking a rucksack [within the "permitted size] as my cabin baggage item, as I have bought stuff I don't want to risk checking in. Question is, will they let me take a laptop in a laptop carry-case [so some cables / other items in the bag also] as the personal item?

In theory, I should be OK, as the laptop carry-case I have got is smaller than many a briefcase, so I should be able to argue the point. I just wondered if anyone on here had any comments / experiences of this [even better if they were when flying out of MCO].

Thanks
James

That's certainly my understanding of it. Basically, how our rules used to be (one item of hand luggage and one personal item of a similar size restriction) are the carry on rules ex-US. Since the new security measures were brought in i've only ever carried the one carry on though, so cant speak from personal experience.

Thanks,
Sarah

We have flown back from the States several times this year so far and on each occasion have carried two pieces of hand luggage - one the usual pull along trolley and either a laptop in a carrier for Mr A or a handbag for me. Never had a problem but you need to remember when leaving from the UK only one piece of hand baggage is allowed but I believe that may change soon.
