Welcome to the V-Flyer forums/fora [:)]

Please make sure you read & understand the Privacy Statement (note, when you've registered there is no need to click 'Agree' again, since this was done during the signup process), and Forum FAQ, as these form the Terms & Conditions of site usage. The Forum FAQ will also help you with how to post using the forum software (including how to edit/delete a post).

A set of Virgin Atlantic FAQs have been created here and are regularly updated with new information. Please review these to see if your Virgin Atlantic-related question is already covered. Please also remember that this site is completely independent to Virgin Atlantic & the Virgin Group of companies.

Before posting new topics, we would ask that you perform a search to make sure the question hasn't been asked before. If you find that it has been asked before, and you need further clarification, please add your question to the existing topic.

New posting feature addition
In line with this section of the FAQ, you might have noticed a new icon appearing at the end of the 'Format' line when replying to a post: Image

This is a new, built-in spell-checker. When you have finished composing your reply, you simply click on this icon and a new window will open with your text spell-checked - any errors (within the confines of the dictionary of course!) will be highlighted in yellow.

Unfortunately, at the moment this feature isn't compatible with the 'Quick Reply' feature.

If you have any questions about our 'language' policy, or have any difficulties you'd like to make us aware of, please don't hesitate to get in touch with the Moderator/Administration/Editorial team.

Extra site FAQs
There are some Frequently Asked Questions about forum-related matters that aren't covered above. Here we'll try to explain them (NB: all {} brackets are to stop the tags working for display in this post, they should be replaced with square ones []) when you want to use them):

Q: Which plane will I be on?
A: We don't have access to details of the actual plane that will be on a specific route, or a specific day. Aside from security concerns, please remember that the plane assigned to a particular flight is not guaranteed and can change right up to departure due to operational reasons. Usually you can work out the type of plane by comparing the the Virgin Atlantic seat map associated with your booking and the seat maps on V-Flyer. Also, the route history page will give you an idea of the type of plane recently flying that route.

Q: What are the best seats to pick?
A: Please review the seat ratings page for V-Flyers' current seat opinions

Q: Where does V-Flyer stand with regard to copyright?
A: Please see this post and the Privacy Policy

Q: Can I post newly discovered misprice or mistake deals, tier point or upgrade strategies?
A: Yes, but as we mention here, to maintain the quality and value of the site, these posts are limited to the members-only Clubhouse forum. Note that if you make a post of a newly discovered deal in one of the public fora, one of the moderators will move it into the Clubhouse. You will require a membership in order to access topics stored in the Clubhouse forum.

Q: What do all the abbreviations mean?
A: With this being a set of internet-based & aviation-related fora, there is a fair amount of internet abbreviation and semi-technical language used. We all know this can be confusing (even daunting), so we created a Glossary to explain them - please see this page

Q: Where can I see a list of all the airport codes?
A: You'll find that most posters will use the 3 letter airport code when referring to destinations - please see this page for a comprehensive list of airport codes. If it's an obscure one that we haven't listed on that page, have a look at this site.

Q: How do I get one of the countdown tickers that people have in their signature?
A: This is a paid member benefit only - firstly you need to purchase a membership kit in the store. Once your membership has been processed, reference this thread to find out how to get your countdown ticker.

Q: Why does my countdown timer show 'NaN hours, NaN Minutes, NaN secs'?
A: Please see this post

Q: How do I get the route maps to appear in my trip reports?
A: The maps display automatically if you format the Trip Report title in the following manner:
{flight number} {airport-airport} {date}
e.g.
VS019 LHR-SFO 08 Nov 2006

Q: The Expert Flyer forum keeps prompting me for a password - how do I find out what it is?
A: The Expert Flyer forum is now a paid member benefit only - firstly you need to purchase a membership here. Once your membership has been processed, reference this thread to get the password.

Q: What are the little planes below a member's post count?
A: This is a paid member benefit only - firstly you need to purchase a membership here. Once your membership has been processed, any future flights you enter in the Itineraries Forum will be viewable by hovering your mouse over the little plane.

Q: How do I put a picture into my profile?
A: Firstly get the photo onto your PC and edit it to crop out any unwanted area, adjust brightness levels, etc... The profile space is square, so try and make the picture the same dimensions in height and width otherwise you might look a bit 'squished'. The space in your profile page is 150 x 150 pixels, so that would be the ideal size.

Next, you need to get the picture uploaded to a webserver. Most ISPs give you your own webspace as part of your subscription, and that's an ideal place to put it. Note that V-Flyer does not offer this storage facility.

Finally, go to edit your profile. In the Picture URL: box, type the location of the picture you want to appear. This needs to be a link to the picture file itself, not the page that it appears on - so you might end up with a URL something like: http://www.mywebhost.com/mugshot.jpg
Save your profile, and your picture will appear [:)]

Q: What are the titles for under a member's forum name?
A: The titles are an indication of how many posts have been made by that member in the V-Flyer fora. For reference, here are the titles:

Just Checked-In = 0-4 posts
New Passenger = 5-49 posts
V-Flyer Frequent Passenger = 50-149 posts
V-Flyer Cabin Crew = 150-499 posts
V-Flyer Senior Cabin Crew = 500-999 posts
V-Flyer Cabin Services Supervisor = 1,000-1,999 posts
V-Flyer Flight Service Manager = 2,000-4,999 posts
V-Flyer Flight Engineer = 5,000-9,999 posts
V-Flyer First Officer = 10,000-24,999 posts
V-Flyer Pilot = 25,000-49,999 posts
V-Flyer Senior Pilot = 50,000+ posts

You will also see members with the title 'V-Flyer Moderator' - these members are the site editorial team and have special posting powers. Occasionally, for special endeavours & sterling work, 'one-off' titles are granted - see if you can spot them (there are no prizes [;)])

NB: These titles do not in any way reflect any position or status within Virgin Atlantic or the Virgin Group

Q: How do I upload images to the V-Flyer Gallery?
A: Firstly, make sure your image is in JPEG or GIF format and below 120k in size, then go to the Photo Gallery page and click on the section you want to upload to. Then click 'Upload a photo to this category' and fill in the relevant sections. When you press submit & answer the 'are you sure?' question, you should get an 'upload successful' message. From this point, a member of the editorial team will approve/decline the image (NB you will only be notified if the image is declined or there is a query about it).

All photos uploaded onto the site should be specific to either Virgin Atlantic, Travel, V-Flyer People or Destinations linked to Virgin Atlantic. Essentially, they should always have a 'travel' theme.

While we all appreciate the 'social' side of the photograph postings to date, we must be aware that these images are not always clear or relevant to all members and we must also be mindful of the space we use up on the server to store these. As always, people are more than welcome to host such images on their own web space/server and link to them in a post.

Q: How do I add images to my posts?
A: There are 2 methods of adding images to posts:
-- i) Using the {img}{/img} tags:
These require a direct link to the image URL, for example:
{img}http://www.v-flyer.com/photos/1793.jpg{/img}
However, the {img} tags will just insert the full sized image - i.e. if it's bigger than the layout boundaries, it won't be scaled down to look nice in your post. There's a better way of inserting images, which only works for images hosted in the V-Flyer Gallery:
-- ii) Using the {photo}{/photo} tags.
After your image has been uploaded & approved for entry in the V-Flyer Gallery, open the full resolution version and right-click the image itself. In the properties/location section, you'll see the URL of the image - select the numeric part of the URL (the XXXX in http://www.v-flyer.com/photos/XXXX.jpg) and use CTRL+C to put it on the clipboard. Next, paste that URL between a set of {photo}{/photo} tags, e.g. {photo}1793{/photo}

Q: What is the de rigeur drink for the Clubhouse? & What is an 'mcuth blue'?
A: We all know that V-Flyers like to enjoy a drink or two (or three or four....). Over the years, one of our number has developed a penchant for a particular drink in the Clubhouse - especially in the serene SFO CH. Commonly known as an 'mcuth blue', this is simply a Blue Lagoon cocktail. The bog standard '1 oz. Vodka, 1 oz. Blue Curacao, Lemonade' recipe is very nice (in the SFO CH, you're likely to have Citron Vodka in place of 'normal'), but for another twist on this, get the bartender to replace the vodka with Bombay Sapphire gin (or add it, as below).

mcuth's favourite recipe is out of the Bombay Sapphire menu book:
1 shot Bombay Sapphire gin
1 shot Vodka
1 shot Blue Curacao
1 shots fresh lime juice
1 shot sugar syrup
(again, alternatively, use Citron Vodka in place of the normal vodka)

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in contact with any of the nice people listed below. Enjoy, and happy posting! [:)]
