Interesting BMI Comments ce soir

Just checked in at BRU and joked to the BMI checkin crew (who had asked me why I wanted to use my VS not UA number) that I thought BMI's being taken over by VS would be great. He looked as though I'd crept into his bedroom and left a mess on his bed.

Apparently BMI groundstaff here (posting from lounge) prefer to see themselves as a kind of BA and believe that such a move would be retrograde. The comment I found the most interesting was his contention that VS blurred the lines between passengers and staff whereas with BMI at least you knew where you stood.

In the light of the recent wonderful parties I can sort of see a point but not one I'd necessarily agree with. I'd be VERY interested in VS crew perspective but only marginally less interested in others [8D]...

I suppose the analogy (sp?) would be
Ba are a local cricket team, led by the Vicar, well meaning but utterly useless at the sport, but look good in their whites standing in the pub lounge
and Virgin are the local soccer team, mad, bad and mental when together, throwing beer over each other in the pub Bar? :D

I think it's only a matter of time before Virgin and bmi merge.

With the recent order for new aircraft and the wish list of new destinations, VS need to get their hands on some valuable slots at LHR.

I feel that bmi are a bit confused over their strategy and can't decide if they are short haul, long haul or low cost!

A merger would provide feeder traffic from Europe into LHR and a bigger long haul base from Manchester.

I heard (from a close source), that when BMI chief, Sir Michael Bishop, was told that Branson wanted to buy Concorde for a pound he said, "That's all very well, but who's going to lend him the money?"

It would be interesting to see what happens on this front. I heard a rumour that bmi would merge into VS and bmibaby would not be sold. Those on the board that werent transfered to VS would then run bmibaby.
If VS has this as a long term plan then it would explain why VS is not in a rush to open up routes from MAN- they will take over BD's.
It will be interesting to see though as what would the carrier be called? And surely the brilliant bmi livery wouldnt be lost to the history books. VS on such short routes like LHR-EDI or LHR-CDG just doesnt sound right to me- although im not complaining. Surely the *a would have something to say abut all this after all VS will need to cut BD's routes to allow for extra slots for new destinations.Anyone else have anyother thoughts.

Perhaps shorthaul would become "Virgin Europe" or something similar, with "Virgin Atlantic" kept for longhaul ops?

This would help prtect the brand I would have thought.

With Virgin Express being sold to SN Brussels, maybe this is making way for a new european virgin operation?
