On my flight back from Istanbul yesterday the woman in the row behing me was in full flow when I boarded, talking to her neighbours about what can best be described as a 'fart machine' - how people reacted to the noise, the time she and her husband had used it to convince friends that the husband had a serious complaint etc.etc.

My headphones and Ipod went on as soon as I could use them, but when I had to take them off for landing, she was still going [V], although thankfully on a different topic. As we landed she said "I bet all these people are thinking 'thank goodness that woman's shut up', we've been talking non stop, haven't we?" I think she was right with the first point :D, but I get the impression it had been more of a monologue than a conversation!

However much the stress of sitting next to a PITA, I have always found listening to Wish You Were Here with my eyes closed relieves the symptoms immediately.

I suspect that for many of us flying is the ultimate way to escape our cell phone/24-hour news cycle/Blackberry pager/Entertainment Tonight-hyped world of ours. Most of the people I sit near seem to agree, so we rarely do more than exchange a good greeting. My secret weapons are my Bose headset (on) and my eyes closed, that is, of course, until the drinks arrive or the VT attendant comes around. After one drink (okay, maybe two) I find I can tune out most talkers anyway.

Regards,
Chuck-

Worst neighbour was a scary lady who was randomly afraid of flying and kept grabbing my arm. This happened on and off for about seven hours!! Freaked me out.

I find that the best time to chat is during final approach, you can't watch V.Port, you can't sleep, so why not get to know your neighbour! I always buy an exit seat and end up chatting away to the Stewards and my neighbour, and before you know it you're on the ground.
