Clubhouse etiquette

Hi all,

Been a reader for a while but my first post.

Going to Mauritius on hols for a wedding anniversary on Jan 11 and have booked UCS through VH. It is our second visit to the Clubhouse but will be getting a treatment for the first time.

What is the etiquette for tipping. Is it the 'done thing' and if so to what sort of level?

Also does anyone know if clubhouse facilities are available at MRU for the return journey?

As I haven't seen a TR for LHR-MRU I guess I had better get my notepad and camera out in preparation.

This is a subject of debate and personal preference here on VF. I do tip the person 5 quid as I normally tip a similar amount to my hair cut person (but she is my god sister). Tips are welcome but not required.

Tipping in the Clubhouse, the stance is that it is at your discretion, a lot of V-Flyers tip, but i sense the majority of passengers do not. I tip the hair stylists when i get my hair cut, usually a fiver. I dont tip the waiting staff though. Just do what you feel comfortable with.

There isnt a Clubhouse at MRU, I'm not sure what is on offer exactly, but I'm assuming that UC and FC Au passengers will have shared lounge access with someone like Air Mauritius.

Hi Mike.

Welcome to V-Flyer.

I've never tipped in the CH and I think the staff would probably be very embarrassed by it and return it.

According the VS website there are no clubhouse or shard lounges at MRU so all you'll have is the normal terminal facilities. Also, as you arrive late evening the Revivals lounge will be closed too.

So make the most of the outbound visit. Eat, drink, be merry and have dip in the hot tub.

Hey Mike - Happy New Year and welcome to posting!

Tipping is very much a personal thing. Some people don't, others can't conceive of not. From my perspective it's like being comped a meal at a restaurant, so I tip in the bistro and I tip after treatment. Normally I'd tip £5 for the treatment and given I normally just have a burger, £2-4 (if Mrs D is with me).

MRU must have some kind of lounge but it won't be at a Clubhouse standard

Looking forward to your TR - Mrs D and I were thinking about MRU but the Hilton gets mixed reviews and I want to burn some HH points....

PS I suspect that although there is no mention of MRU on the VS Web Site this MIGHT be an update issue as Tobago explicitly notes no facilities, so I'd expect the same for MRU.

Thanks for the replies, I've definitely got to do a trip report now haven't I.
Holiday hotel is at the lower end of the scale but tripadviser reports on it are pretty good in the main. Just a few moans as there always are.

Our luxury was the UCS booking- 12 hours on the plane each way was the incentive especially as our last UCS experience was on I believe the shortest flight LHR-BOS-LHR.

I have never tipped, always wanted to but at the same time felt I might insult the staff if I did try give them cash.

It would be easier if they had some sort of optional fund you could pop something in on the way out.

EGG. Exactly my thoughts. It's very un-British to tip in the UK and having been in a job where you did get tipped (only at Christmas) it was embarrassing at times.

You could always have a nice dump in the restrooms instead if you want - I know this is what I did to compliment the Concorde Room and the 'attentive staff' at T4 last week..... [}:)]

I tip the people in Cowshed nearly everytime, and have tipped wait staff on occasion when they have been good. There is no issue in tipping.

There is a lounge at MRU, I was there in April last year for my birthday, we flew AF J and from memory there are only 2 lounges a BA terrace lounge and a MK lounge with a first class and business class section. The J class is upstairs and isn't anything special, there were a few sandwiches and pastries, soft drinks and a bar area. Our flight was fairly early and didn't fancy much so just had water.

It is nice to get away from the throng of the airport, it is fairly small and nice to just sit and relax.

Hope you have a great time, we loved MRU, the people, place and weather was just perfect! [y]

I had to put my coffee down before it erupted all over my computer! The images that flash through one's mind ...

As to tipping - I always do for haircut and beauty treatments, and occasionally for the wait staff. I believe it entirely civil to do so. When I have, I've found it very pleasantly and politely received.

Enjoy Mauritius, my next trip there will be on Emirates (miles to use!).
