Hi, this is my first post, so be patient. Have flown with Virgin to Las Vegas 3 times (2 economy and one PE), and am due to fly to Vegas again next week - in economy. I have approx 90k miles and wondered what the possibility of upgrading on the day were. I booked during the sale, and also used miles + money and got the flights for 306 each - am I right in thinking that I couldn't upgrade these flights either with miles or money?

Also, if I can't upgrade, what are the chances of getting an extra legroom seat on the day (I assume I can't use on-line check-in if I want to get an extra legroom seat?)

Thanks for any advice!

You would first need to pay the fare difference between your sale fare (probably an N or X) and a L, B or Y fare; as you can only use miles to upgrade a ticket booked in L, B or Y class. If I were you, I'd probably save my money and look to do a pure mielage redemption for a future trip.

Extra legroom can be bought in the form of Exit seats, but there are only so many and there is a cost associated.

The best shot at exit seats would be by using twilight check in (the day before departure).

As Richard said, save the miles for a 100% redemption or for buying a Y,B,L fare and upgrading to Upper for 60k miles.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. Won't be able to do the twilight check-in as we are connecting from Belfast that morning, so I'll keep my fingers crossed we can get them that morning.

I thought I wouldn't be able to upgrade with miles as it was a sale fare, but thoought maybe I could pay on the day? Also, I have a reward PE upgrade on my FC statement which I didn't have when I booked or I would have used this - I assume I can't use this on this trip either?

All these flight codes and fare rules are totally confusing to me - maybe before I book my next flight I'll ask here for the best way to use my miles and reward upgrade.

You could pay to upgrade to PE and not use miles, but again that is unlikely to be cheap. I'd guess around £350 each, each way.

The PE reward can only be used with pure reward flgihts, so that may help given yoru nice stash of miles! [y]

Fare rules and codes are indeed complicated, but feel free to ask if you need help in the future.

Thanks,
Richard
