If Virgin are so unsure as to what will happen to the LGW 747's as in refits, then why are they repainting them?

Remember painting aircraft has very little to do with cosmetics. The paint helps protect the metal, reflect sunlight, can be polished to smooth the airflow etc. etc.

When I first saw the title I thought it said LROM gets new colours...[:I]

Also remember, the LGW fleet is no the oldest 744's VS has.

So did I [:I]

There is something about the 744, it just looks right somehow, what a lovely bird! [y]

I would really prefer the money spent on the insides of the B744 fleet which are getting increasing tired.

On recent flights I have had APUs failed, always 1 toilet not working and generally scruffy interior, and this is on aircraft which have had their seats replaced!

hey just flown on her the other day to MCO she is looking good. and you guys are right the aircraft are painted for operatonal reasons, and they look great when they are done puts some other airline's to shame when they have dirt marks all over them! her interior is also looking good just had the seat covers and foam changed i think and her IFE is working in every seat (for the minute!) im sure one day we will see the LGW fleet get re fitted, cant wait for the day as its just as bad for the crew when the IFE doesn't work and people ask wear the purple leather seats are that are advertised in many magazine (the times travel mag for one!). i think when they do re fit the LGW fleet we should all have a get together to celabrate!!!

I fear by the time that happens, we'll be celebrating the new new refit in the LHR metal [:#]

Must admit she looks good but have to agree that the LGW fleet needs a spruce up interior wise and sharpish.

Virgin has always had my business over the other players but looking at the PE areas of the 744's at the moment has started to make me think otherwise. I just get the feeling that UC has become the be all and end all for VS since they sold 49% to Singapore Airlines and that really winds me up!

If VS arent careful they are going to start losing business on the so called B&S routes as the upgrade to PE is a hell of a lot pricier than some other operators are offering.

Have booked a PE return to St Lucia in January 09 for our Wedding Anniversary and taking the parents with us for their first holiday abroad so I am crossing everything available that they have been done by then.

yeah i agree with you all, but would like to piont out that or upper class sells itself really, yes we are advertising the new upper wing at LHR but you will notice not the actual cabin really. virgins be all and end all at the mo is PE which is being very much high lighted on every flight i do, this is where we need to improve, doing up the LGW fleet is no mean task and if we did (im sure there is an engineer on here somewhere who would clarify) it would take a good few weeks, at the minute we simply dont have a spare aircraft sitting around to replace the one we would have to ground to re fit it. so untill they can do that (we do keep hearing this year) they will fly as they are. if we did re fit now we would have to cancel a flight for a few weeks and that would result in alot of unhappy passengers, so i suppose its anyones guess when this will happen. in the mean time we will all just have to put up with what we offer which is still better than most competitors on the same routes from gatwick, and in majority most of my gatwick passengers are always happy when they get off, perhaps good service clouds their eyes.

Isn't VROM one of the Alitalia cancelled order? Weren't these due to be handed back sometime soon? Surely if I have my facts correct (and I might be wrong as I only have hazy memories of all of this) then it wouldn't make sense to repaint an aircraft? Thoughts?

Maybe airlines have to re-paint their A/C every few years in order to keep their Certificate of Airworthiness [:?]

G-VROM's C of A runs out 28/05/2008 (see here)

Yes VROM is on of the cancelled Alitalia, and VS are still undecided on weather or not to keep those 5 airframes. Repainting can also be for operational reasons.

I certainly hope VS keep the LGW 744's as the upstairs PE is probably the best selling point on the LGW routes. Nothing like waltzing up the stairs to sit in your own little world of peace and quiet. [:D][:D]

There's another thread on here about some of the MCO flights being combined after the peak-season is finished later this year (VS27/28 being cancelled and merged with one of the other MCO trips).

I've noticed that once the schools hols are over and the LGW flying programme is thinned, that's the usual time for maintenance and refits on the LGW fleet.

Cheers,
Mike

The aircraft are repainted every six years so it makes sense to paint the new livery then.
