Clubhouse - LHR - dresscode

Hi there

I'll be using the LHR clubhouse next month on the way to JNB (gold status thanks to my employer [:D] but flying in Y [:(]) - is there a dress code? Are shorts and flipflops ok??

Also as I've not taken a VS flight before I dont have my card (despite being Au) - how do I get hold of it before flying??

There isn't a dress code in the Clubhouse - though if you are buying access through VH it does ask for 'smart casual'.

I can't say I have ever seen anyone in shorts and flip-flops before, but I am sure it has been done. [:?]

Don't worry about your card. As you approach the podium at the top of the stairs, the lovely ladies at the door have a touch screen monitor and all gold card holders on each flight are listed.

I've worn shorts and flip-flops before and apart from a few odd glances have not had a problem. In fact its the most comfortable way to fly in my opinion (and easier to change into a sleep suit) [y]

Thank guys.....another question....when can we get into the CH before our flight? Being Au card holders we'll be using the UC check-in - can we only check in 3 hrs before departure or could we say check-in 5 hrs before and really take advantage of the CH? [}:)]

You can check-in for your flight as soon as the check-in desks open (~06:15) and enter the Clubhouse as soon as that opens (07:00) as well, which ever VS flight you are on that day.

Thanks James. As we are flying 20:30 on a Friday, we may arrive at LHR early to avoid getting stuck in the rush hour traffic! Does anyone know what the busiest time at the CH is? Even at the busy time is it still possible to get treatments/a table at the brasseie etc?

As to the card - you may well be asked for it, they don't wholly rely on the system and especially if you're not travelling in the UC cabin a secondary check has been in place for some time.

The easiest way to resolve this is to call Flying Club and have them email you a letter confirming your Au status - they can do this pretty quickly.

Why don't you pre-book a treatment in the Cowshed. Here's the link. Just scroll down to the bottom and there's a link to the booking form.

I've never had a problem getting a table at the brasserie and the last time we were there at about 7pm it was relatively quiet.

It's only my opinion -- and I mean, literally, only my opinion -- but I believe one should dress for the CH. Given the hour of your flight, I suggest a dinner jacket made of breathable material, in a well-tailored cut. The vibe of VS lends itself to one's more frolicsome clothes, so feel free to break out that candy-stripe Paul Smith bespoke number you had made last season -- no need to look like some City boy.

Additionally, the shine of the CH's space-age features would look even more alluring reflected in well-polished shoes, preferably hand-made by John Lobb.

This is how I travel. I know very few others do. But you did ask.

Whatever you decide to wear, do enjoy your flight.

Thanks guys....I don't want to lower the tone in there...just that it's hopefully going to be hot in UK and reasonably so in JNB when I go and as its a night flight I wanted to feel comfortable....

I also saw on another thread that it seems to be busiest in the CH when all the westerly flights go in the morning - all the easterly and southern flights go later so I got the impression that there were less CH users that westerly flights??

Flights to New York, SFO and LA tend to be very busy in UC, and have their fair share of gold card holders in PE, too. It always gets quite busy by the time I leave the CH, even if I arrive at 7am. Can be a challenge getting a table for breakfast past 8am for a couple of hours. Never been in the afternoon, so can't tell you if it is lighter, but it is certainly busy in the morning.
