This is really nothing more than a vent b/c it is not VS fault that I am in this predicament. I know it is my fault, so no need to point that out. [;)]

To try to make this concise - MrStars has a work conference in NY in June so we are planning a visit around his conference. We will fly into NY on different days and planned to fly back to LHR together. His ticket is paid for by his company, mine is not so I wanted to use miles to upgrade to a G for the return.

Wed night I called VS and was told there was G availability on the 19:40, but not on the 21:35. Thursday, MrStars ticket was booked on the 19:40 and a PE booking was held for me. MrStars PA told me the TA could not handle miles upgrades so we would need to do that after the fact. This made me nervous. Rightfully so, as it turns out.

For no reason other than I was taking part in a torturous 5 hour driving lesson on Thursday, I didn't focus on my held booking until Friday. I called VS to enquire about G availability and found out there was now G availability on the 21:35, but not the 19:40. Basically, the opposite of what they had on Wednesday evening. I explained the situation and the agent told me that as it was within 24 hours MrStars could most likely be moved from the 19:40 to the 21:35 at no charge. I called his PA but she said it was not possibile as his ticket was booked through the wholesale division of VS. I called back the agent I had spoken to and explained the situation. She tried to call and get a G release on the 19:40 but had no luck.

Friday afternoon & this morning MrStars PA was on the phone with the VS wholesale team who also tried to get a G released on the 19:40, with no luck. Now we can either pay for me to fly UC with MrStars on the 17:40, which nearly doubles the price of my ticket, or we can fly on two different flights, which creates some degree of inconvenience with regards to getting to JFK. Or, we can wait and see if any more seats will open up. Only problem with that is I will (selfishly) be furious if MrStars is in UC and I am on the same flight in PE.

So, that is my predicament. As I said, I know it's not VS fault, but I am frustrated anyway and needed to vent. It's a long shot - but any gurus out there have any ideas for me that maybe I didn't think of?

Mr Stars could swap with you and give up his UC seat?

Not to put too fine a point on it, but why did you not ask them to hold the G for you when it was available, if it was a miles upgrade?

I love that suggestion, but surprisingly, MrStars does not! [;)]

I should have, just as I probably should have handled the entire booking from the get go. I was told that my husband's PA was handling all of the bookings so I was letting her do so. I didn't think it would work for me to hold the seat and then for the PA to try to book it the next day. Usually our travel to the US is completely independent of his job so I do the booking - this was the one time I let go of the reins and I don't think I'll do that again in the future.

If you want the PA to complete a booking for you, you can always hold the seats you want, and add the PA's name as authorised to work on your behalf in the booking... just for future.

And.... phone and ask JUST how busy the Upper class cabin is on the flight your husband is on. They may STILL release upgrade seats nearer the date, and you can always try at JFK. Good luck!

Thanks - that is good to know for future reference, just in case!

I'll see how busy the flight is - that might help me to decide whether to take the gamble.

Following up my own vent to say that I decided to fly back two days later. So MrStars will fly back on Sunday night (with 2 of his work colleagues) and I will fly back on Tuesday night. He will take a car to JFK on Sunday courtesy of his work, so my parents won't have to drive to the airport twice.

Not a perfect solution, but not a huge deal, either.
