richarda, I do think there is a difference between crew drinking on board a flight which is the subject of this post, and crew drinking on down-time.

This thread seems to be geting a little masty. Perhaps the mods should lock it now as we seem to be heading for a slagging match.

I agree it would be highly innapropriate for the crew person to do this and I have had some pretty bad experiences onboard but I couldn't bring myself to get someone sacked or risk another senior crewmember being held responsible because they didn't know what was happening

Think I know which flight you are talking about, as one of my friends was one of the crew. The crew-member concerned had been secretly drinking alcohol and became abusive to both crew and passengers. The FSM and CSSs arranged for management to meet the a/c and the crew-member was breathalysed. Transpired that she had been dumped by her boyfriend and took it rather badly.
Please dont think this is a regular occurrence. In my ten years with virgin I have never witnessed a crew-member drinking on board nor had any reason to suspect that someone was doing so.
However in contrast when I worked short-haul for BA, crew would regularly have a baileys and hot chocolate before boarding when you were stuck out on a remote stand with two doors open in the middle of winter and many pursers would leave you a fizzy orange (wink wink) in the galley for after the service.
These days at virgin we have a strict drugs and alcohol policy, and anyone suspected of being under the influence faces the certainty of being tested.
I'm sorry you had to witness such appalling behaviour and unproffessionalism.

If I was crew for some of you lot, I'd be drinking, too. Behave!

As to the topic at hand...quite right to report it.

If virginboy747 is correct, then this sounds like an isolated case [which is of course good] that was dealt with well by the CSS/FSM/VS Management at the downroute end of the flight. If the allegations are proved, then I am sure VS will take appropriate action.

Obviously, I do have some [very limited] sympathy for the crew member involved who was allegedly going through a difficult time in his/her personal life. That said, you sign up for certain jobs & have to know exactly what the score is when it comes to drink/drugs when on duty.

This has been investigated by Virgin with multiple emails. It seems the incident was recognised by other crew members and I am told someone has left the company. I would add that this was not the intention of the complaint, saftey was the issue not someone losing thier livelyhood.

It is interesting that so many posters comments were that this could not have happened!

Well I did think the situation sounded a bit outrageous, but I guess some things in life are. Apparently the outrageous behavior was noticed by more than one person.
