I had an L1 for a while and in my experience it made travel more complicated as the questioning became more intrusive. Even now I get 'Oh so you used to have an L1 what happened?' type questions from time to time.
Oh I am a native American and I get the fun questions when re-entering the USA (where I am a citizen). The darn computer list all my entries into the USA and they contrast that with my age.
Now enter the UK or any EU country; no questions and barely look at the passport. Can't make everyone happy. I wish other countries asked more questions or better yet had an Australia ETA-like system.
