If you purchase an economy ticket for 50,000 miles and pay the taxes can you then upgrade that ticket to premium or upper using the extra miles required if there is availability at the airport on your day of departure.

We want to use some miles but there are no premium or upper available and I know if you have a qualifying ticket you can do this but I was not sure if you could do the same with a miles only ticket.

If anyone knows the answer, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks,

Yes, if you have a ticket purchased purely on miles then you can upgrade further at any time, availability dependant of course. You may have luck on the day of departure if you ask at check-in.

Although last time I tried this at Heathrow the PE check in agent told me that miles tickets weren't upgradable with more miles... I told him that was poppycock and he suggested I tried at the ticket desk - they were very obliging and managed to process my upgrade using an AMEX PE upgrade voucher that had expired. Happy days.

Therefore if you have the time it may be worth trying at the ticketing desks first (or at least second if the check in agent says no)

Also had the same successes when flying PE on reward and upgrading to UC so give it a go - IMHO if you don't ask you don't get!

Have a great flight
