So on the subject of charges me and the missus used miles to purchase tickets to nairobi for departure on the 1st Jan in Prem Eco. Can we expect any of the 574 pounds we paid in Taxes/Fees/Charges/Surcharges ?

You mean will you get anything back? The simple answer to that is no. Virgin didn't retrospectively back charge people the extra when they increased the surcharge so they won't give any back when they go down.

I think upgrading L's is an excellent use of miles and an excellently priced way to fly UC. Still earn miles and TP's, 40k less miles than a full G which would earn nothing and an L is usually very well priced.

Glad that route into UC is seemed good use of mileage, as this was the concept I'd considered for getting the family out to Oz in 09 in UC. Upgrading a lowest priced useable Econ fare, & still earning some mileage/tiers back for the trip.
