Hi amitav

Looking at the prices you quoting, it does seem as though you have the discounted fares (K in PE and Z in UC).

If this is the case, you would have to pay to upgrade your PE ticket to an S or W before you could use your miles - this might be more expensive that grabbing the Z while it is still available.

Just my 2 cents worth

Haven't checked the prices ex-UK, but if it's really 1300 for UC, you can expect the upgradeable PE fare to be around 800/850 usually, maybe a bit more, so like buns says it's not a much bigger layout to buy the UC sale fare. You can certainly use miles to upgrade a PE S/W fare, subject to availability. Availability varies, but seats often show up close to departure date, even if not available now. You will get 'proper' PE mileage credited, not the new K PE mileage rate, and you can also reserve a limo with miles if you have an upgraded UC fare (but not if the UC fare is Z).

Usually, with a lot of miles in my account and not needing the tier points, I buy low and upgrade. But there's a lot of ways to look at this, of course.

Really you need to speak to FC and see what price an S fare would be so you can compare the difference between buying an UC seat outright or using an S and then 40k miles to upgrade.

You could of course blow your full 100k miles for a straight UC reward, if you are really looking to fly UC the cheapest possible way.

The options are there it is really a matter of you deciding what suits your personal needs best.

Return in S class (lowest upgradable PE) for those two flights is GBP722
Return in L class (lowest upgradable Y) is GBP 592
