I saw this thread on a.net and it got me wondering how much do, we think, that VS spend on each meal in each cabin?

Joking aside (as there are quite a few with regards to the standard of J food on VS by all accounts) how much do we reckon?

Including the whole tray set up and drinks I would imagine something in the region of:
Y: 15
W: 25 (taking into account Baileys run/ supposedly better afternoon tea service)
J: 45-50

Does anyone have any actual info? I am guessing The USA flights will be cheaper per head than NRT or PVG for example.

There was a thread on this some time ago, Will.

I can't remember the figure quoted, but they were a LOT less than the ones you have suggested. [:D]

I saw a TV documentary about airline meals a few years ago but I don't remember any spoecific costs being mentioned as they were commercially sensitive.

Part of the programme was a tasting of various meals for a new menu by a small number of the airliens staff. One commented that it would have been nice to have had ONE olive on the starter but based on their estimated number of meals it would have added something like 40k to the cost of the contract. Needless to say the olive was ditched !

Well one must look at how the food gets to the plane.

Short case: Delta's ATL-TGU-ATL

All food for First and Economy is from ATL. No catering at TGU. This increases cost for carrying the food to TGU plus decreases the cargo volume.

Now apply that concept to a VS flight. The same menu is offered inbound to the UK on many routes. The caterer must have all that stuff that makes up the food onboard. Sometimes those meals and drinks are flown from the UK to be served on the return.

I reckon a Y meal would cost less than 3 due to the bulk.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the average J airline meal cost only about 15 and Y been only a few pounds.

I'd be very surprised if an average Y airline meal cost more than 5 per tray.

Whatever the cost is it still amazes me that one can enjoy a nice meal whilst sitting in an aluminium tube seven miles up in the air and hurtling along at 550mph.[:D]

This may make me peculiar perhaps but I love airline food - although maybe thats because it is part of the travel experience for me and I love to travel... Long live the airline meal!

Makes me peculiar too then as love airline food, and i'm a very fussy eater. As a child my parents would have to sweet talk to get me 2 meals, one was never enough for this growing lad [:)]
