Cancelling gold Amex ?

Hi guys
I've read that if cancel my gold Amex card then re open in 6 months I would be able to get the bonus points again ... Does anyone know how I would go about cancelling and has anyone done this before ?

I don't know about the churn but I think you just phone up and cancel. Make sure you transfer all your points before you do it.

Use the secure messaging system.

I think there is a separate option in the menus to cancel.

Hi, as pjh says make sure you transfer your points first then phone and cancel and Amex will write to you confirming.
For churning purposes - if you have a partner here's what I did - I referred him for the gold card first, collecting a bonus when he was accepted, and then closed my card. I then got a supplementary card on his Amex and we spent until his sign up bonus was triggered.

I'm going to wait 7 months to be sure and then use my partner's account to refer me again and start the process all over again.

As Bretty says, refer your OH and assuming they are accepted, collect the bonus, transfer your MR points and close the account. Repeat in 6 months and so on.

I usually call them by telephone to close an account.

If you collect BA Avios also, you can do the same with the Brisitish Airways Amex credit card but do not close these accounts until you have used your 241 voucher (otherwise it becomes invalid).

MBNA who issue the Virgin Atlantic cards generally have that policy. American Express clearly state it must be 6 months before they will allow a re-application for one of their cards but will award the bonus miles again when you reach the introductory target. They have a policy of x2 debit cards and x2 credit cards per individual (if approved).

I have to say that I am dubious as to how likely it is that credit card churning affects ones credit score. I have regularly churned, in a systematic way, for years and my score has risen. But I do pay them all off every month so do not have debt on them, maybe that makes a difference. And everyone's circumstances vary of course. The most credit card accounts I have had at one time has been 9. I have that down to a mere 7 these days. They are all different and have different uses, a card for every occassion.

This is exactly what we are doing! I'm about to cancel mine shortly (after transferring out my Amex reward points, and using my Lounge Club access, which will be tomorrow) and it's be the hubby's turn to get a new one
