Question - Does it cost to join the Flying Club?

im very new to the whole virgin atlantic biz. and was wondering, do the frequent flyers program cost money? membership fee? etc.

Hi ukveteran and welcome.

As such, the frequent flyers program (Flying Club) is free and you can join from the Virgin Website prior to taking a flight.

You may end up speding more in your quest for miles, but the actually club itself is free.

There are a few airlines out there that you can pay to join a seperate type of membership 'club' which often gives extra perks like lounge access regardless of status or cabin you travel in. One example of this is the 'Qantas Club' which is approx £350 a year but does give you access to any OneWorld lounge around the world regardless of your ticket type - you just have to fly any OneWorld airline on that day.

remember the old days when you had to have taken so many qualifying flights to become a member?

My memory may be a little hazy, but my recollection is that there was never anything stopping people joining the old Freeway Club, but you had to do 3? return transatlantic trips in economy within a twelve month period before you earned points for them.

I think this then made you a silver member, which then was status for life.

I stand to be corrected on this though [:I]

You had to do 3 roundtrip flights in Economy or a one way in Premium or Upper before you earned points for them.

Silver used to be 10 TP under the old, old TP earning ratios (which varied depending on which route you were flying), but you got at least 10 for flying UC, so you only had to do one flight to get Silver. Obviously the Silver for life thing got removed, but for good reason - there were a very large number of stale Silver members that hardly ever flew that were filling up the PE check-ins.
