NEW UPPER CLASS WINE & CHAMPAGNE

As of 1st December Virgin will have a new wine.Champagne will change to Laurent Perrier. There will be 3 new white wines and 3 new red wines. We will also have 'prosecco' an Italian sparkling wine which will be used for bucks fizz and the introduction of chanpagne cocktails such as Bellini's! Enjoy!!

Oh, superb! Laurent Perrier is my favourite non-vintage.

BA certainly do, not sure if it's only in the FIRST cabin, or Club as well - it's a Willi Opitz I believe.

The Willi Opitz wasnt served in the Club World flight I was on yesterday so I would 'assume' its in First. Well I say it wasnt served as it wasnt on the wine list but I didnt try asking so maybe it was there.

Great, Virgin have done it again.Yet more cost cutting at our expense.

O.K, Laurent Perrier Brut better than the Jaquart about £18 a bottle.
Prosecco, tip in peach juice and it's drinkable £8.00

White Burgundy, a very ordinary wine £7.15
Marsanne/Viognier. Could be intresting but at £5.80 a bottle don't expect a world changing experience.
Pinot Gris. Thin dish water, a waste of £5.62

Ah... Elderton Shiraz. A bloody great big mouthful of wine. This is the sort of stuff that UC pax should be served, even with dumbded palates at 36k this will get your juices flowing. At £15 a bottle it should provide some sort of excitement( and a monumental hangover)!!
Lussac St Emilion. I find satellite St Emilion often fails to deliver much. This is not listed in my BBR list so cannot price, but would imagine in £6-£7 bracket.
Laderas. No experience but looks like a quaint regional Spanish that BBR have a container load of and are banging it out at £5.62 a bottle.
Now, I know we should all be grateful and say "thank you" etc. But, NO, with a couple of exceptions, this is an awful selection, just what I would expect from the dinosaurs at BBR. They are a traditional merchant and have a place in the wine trade, and this list proves that their place is NOT in selecting wines for the airline industry. 8 wines in total and 6 of them are 'Old World'and IMHO not all are suited to our suppressed palate at 36k.
Also there are NO 'stickies'. Come on Virgin provide your premium passengers with a decent, well constructed wine list.
Anyway rant over, back to work.

Even though I'm no wine expert, I tend to agree with you Marko. When I looked at that list, it certainly whiffed of an old school choice.

I agree with Marko completely. The L-P is a welcome change (but P-J would have been much better) and with the exception of the Shiraz the rest are mundane in the extreme. New world wines still generally remain much better value than French wines IMO, and the more robust flavours travel far better -- they could have had a decent Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc (NZ), or a Bonterra Viognier (USA) for example.

Oh well. I'm on the VS21 on Monday and straight to the hotel from the plane, so I'll do some sampling.

I would imagine that it will be a cycle- so for example the wines this month maybe old world but when they next change they could well become predominatly new world next time round.

Working in a nationwide wine merchant- its surprising that the majority of people these days (well in our store anyway) much prefere to have a wine from Chilie than say Spain.

the 'dish water' as it has been called could well be a surprise- argentina are on the rise and will be as big as Chilie in a number of years. You must also remember that the price isn't everything- whilst I have enjoyed some lovely fine wines- one of the best merlot's i have ever had is £4.99 Chillean.

You will also probably find that these wines you can sample are availiable in the Berry's store in T3 to buy.

On the vs03 on the 1st the champers ran out (No it wasn't me) and we were served Prosecco di Valdobbiadene - to be fair they did say it was for Belinis BUT it was total ......

The Pinot Gris was also very poor - bring back the wolfblass

Prosecco de Valdi....is the most people sparkling wine sold in my store- retails at around £8.50 a bottle- quite nice and drinkable. But i do agree not really LP

Read the first page of this and was quite pleased to reach reason when you replied Mark.

LP is good, Parker said the 2003 El Seque had 'surprising finesse' so there's hope for the 2004, 2002 Ch Lucas a distinctly ordinary wine from a poor vintage, not sure whether that is Command Shiraz from Elderton or just the Shiraz, however I agree it should be good. The whites relatively humdrum. Also very very surprised there is nothing from the US. Have just returned from Virginia and sampled some very pleasing wines there (not the point of the trip) and returned in PE to taste the 'house red' which was quite spittable [:$]!

2003 vintage french wines will be superb- remember that was the really hot summer us and france had- and so far the cheaper 2003 vintage that have been coming out have been fab!
