Sorry, but I still don't see how this is Virgin's blame. It would seem to me that once a ticket (or booking ref) number has been handed over, it's the full property of the passenger on the booking.
There has to be some sort of good faith assumption that the bookee takes responsibility for those s/he is booking for.
On the other hand, it's a real shame that Lucy's generosity has been abused in this case--but I would think VS would allow her to revoke the miles if nothing else, which would effectively cancel the ticket, or require the evil girlfriend's parent to find himself having to pony up a fairly hefty sum at the gate for a reg fare ticket.
Here's hoping the cheque is in the mail.
