Latest report. I spent the whole day yesterday doing work and catching up after my trip away. Then Sarah and I went out in the evening. Finally took myself off to be about 11:00 with another pill. In other words, a perfectly normal day.
Slept like a like a log, again with the vivid dreams (Giant, killer goldfish invading the village where we live). And woke up about 5:30 - so a full nights sleep and even a bit of a lie-in.
Assuming that I feel OK today, I think I will call it a day on the pills and take it I am back to UK time. All in all I have found them remarkably helpful, although I could have done with out the LSD like dreams!
If you will excuse me now, I have a tall building I need to go and leap over.........

Perhaps that is why you are advised to keep your seat belt fastened when sleeping [:o)]

I take it in combination with Tylenol PM - works a treat but i second what people have been saying about the dreams - a bit scary at first but i think the dreams just testify to how deep asleep you get??

The tylenol also comes in handy if you stub your toe whilst sleep walking[:o)][:o)]

They now do a product called Tylenol Simply Sleep. It's a PM without the pain reliever, just the diphenhydramine.

The problem I have with this stuff is that the regular dose, 50mg (2x25mg) doesn't seem to do it for me, seems to take a long time to kick in, and then I still feel drowsy the next day. Then, I am a big guy, so it's probably something like trying to anaesthetise an elephant or something.

Having said this, I've never tried it in combination with melatonin, so maybe that's something to try next trip.

Cheers,
Mike

Beware Mike. Some users pop 200mg or more for a really nice trip, and I don't mean a trip by plane. It appears the halucinations are different to those with other drugs, in that there is no way to differentiate them from reality. So best to stick to the prescibed dose I think.

Hmm.. joined the thread too late to impart my medical wisdom!! ;)

Melatonin is a drug. So, like other drugs, it works for some people and not for others. However, it is certainly more 'physiological' than other sleep 'remedies', and certainly a better side-effect profile than benzodiazepines (temazepam, etc).

The comment about 'resetting your body-clock' is over-simplified, but probably closest to how it acts. So don't use it as a sleeping tablet as such, better use is for time-zone change.

Thanks for the clarification McCoy. Nice to get the low down from someone who knows what they are talking about.

To finish of the 'diaries of a Rat', I did not take the melatonin last night and had a blisful deep sleep right through to my normal time. All the body functions, like getting hungry etc, seem to be working normally. So I would say that the course of treatment has definetly speeded up my reaclimatisation to UK time and made the process less painful.

Of course a sample of 1 person with no control is hardly a proper study that NICE would recognise. And it is only a test on US to UK travel, which as the UK is my 'home' time may have been easier. But I will be continuing to use Melatonin, and would recommend it to others to see if it works for them.

Diphenydramine? Wow. I guess that explains those people who appear to be soundly asleep and then go haywire midflight.

I know a friend who habitually takes 100mg to knock himself out for a night flight.

Last time I used it on a flight, I took 50mg, didn't work, took another 25mg, and then zonked, but I woke with a bit of a sore head, and had interrupted sleep patterns for the following week. It sounds like melatonin is the right way to go.

Cheers,
Mike

For those of you who can't get hold of melatonin, I have heard of those who save and then drink their early morning urine so they can get a melatonin boost.

Melatonin is renally excreted and so your 'first catch' is likely to have a substantial amount more in.

This sounds really radical and is not something that I would be comfortable doing (or taking through immigration for that matter!), but you guys should also consider the source of your exogenous melatonin. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland which sits in the middle of the brain. Although I do not know exactly how they retrieve it to put it into tabs for you guys to eat, I wouldn't be surprised if they just mashed up some animals brains to get it. You will therefore be at high risk of exposure to prion based diseases such as CJD as well as the as yet undiscovered diseases.

I know that sounds disgusting. The reason for doing it is so you get an additional dose of your own excreted melatonin.

My point and challenge is: Is that any more disgusting than eating mashed up monkey or cow brains?

Maybe soneome who knows about the true poduction methods for melatonin can enlighten us?

Noone seriously thinks that's how you get melatonin do they? Most drugs can be produced in labs and in any case melatonin exists in small quantities in many plant species, including oats, sweet corn, rice, ginger, tomatoes, bananas and barley.

And drinking urine is frequently done for medical reasons and or spiritual reasons - see http://skepdic.com/urine.html

Medical or spiritual reasons aside its still a vile thought [:$] and something I will never ever consider, Jetlag wins everytime for me.

There are two forms of melatonin available. One is a non-vegitarian version, although I have no idea about its method of manufacture. The other, which I have, is a vegitarian version which, if one reads this thread is information I already mentioned. I have not seen the non-vegitarian version, but the fact that the bottles I did see specifically mentioned they are vegi seems to imply that the other version does exist somewhere.

The vegi qualification on the bottle satisfies me that I have been taking a product that is not derived from either of the two methods mentioned, I am very pleased to say.

So maybe we can now return to talking about the possible benefits (or otherwise) of melatonin in the treatment of jetlag, and keep the other stuff to this forum. While I realise it is an important, immediate and concerning issue, this is after all a site about air travel.

OK McCoy, well let me rephrase it - Nice to get the low down from someone who is more qualified to speak on the subject than me (as an accountant), even if he is only a surgeon and therefore not allowed to even call himself a doctor. ;)[:0]

You've got that the wrong way round Sailor. Surgeons who are qualified enough are allowed to call themselves Mr again.

Anyone tried taking it when flying west? Most of us (I think) seem to focus on the return journey - but actually, an 8 hour time difference is a pain both ways. I'd like not to be waking at 3am Vegas time....

Indeed, a good question. I will be trialing it the week after next and will report on what happens. I have a pig of a set of flight times, so it should be interesting.
