You have to be careful making such assumptions, remember that the older generation dress smart the majority of the time anyways and different people have different ideas on what they should wear for whatever reason, I think as has been said during this post, is that people should wear what THEY feel comfortable in, if's thats Jeans then fine but equally if its a suit etc then why not, never judge a book by its cover, please dress in different ways for many a different reason.

In which case this Saga eligible V-Flyer must put his hand up to never having worn a tie, and is generally absent in the sock department, when flying...

Not too far from saga insurance myself, and I too can confirm that utility trousers and a scraggy old shirt are all that one wears on board.

However, once I reach 60, I fully intend changing my style to white trousers, orange shoes, a navy bowling club blazer and a tie with dribble stains down it. So don't worry attitude, I will conform to your stereotype oneday ;)

Oops. Must be ahead of my time. I have a well travelled, battered, panama already. Essential for both keeping the sun of the acres of baldness and embarrassing the offspring.

FYI

Virgin Blue have the following Dress Standards stated on their tickets. I know they are only a one class airline but it amuses me that they have a dress standard at all:D.

minimum standards of dress on all flights:
footwear (thongs acceptable).
-All adults and children who are capable of walking must wear suitable footwear
-Shorts
-Shirt (singlets are acceptable)

Never having flown First I cannot comment but when flying Business, specially long haul, I wear jeans and a polo shirt and shoes (I would never wear trainers unless exercising - thats just me!)

I would have to agree with the other comments and that as you have paid for the ticket wear what you feel comfortable in.

Hmm. Just what do you refer to as 'the older generation'? If that includes me (nearly 40), then thank you very much. However, not sure my father would agree with you :D.

I tend to dress according to destination, though sometimes origin too. On last flight back from Miami, I arrived at Revivals in thongs (the ones for your feet...), shorts, and a polo. On occasion, I have been tempted to just go to Revivals in the sleep suit.... [:I]

Whilst you are in the older generation compared to me;)(JOKE), I was actually meaning the nearer retiring generation/OAP's, where the gentlemen wear tie's the majority of the time etc......

Second that ! Had I not made a certain decision a few years back I would have been "near retiring" today (had I not dropped dead from stress in the meantime).

Watch out Neil, the Saga Louts are coming...and we're not wearing ties....[8D]

I blame my "hole digging skills" on the fact that I am still soooooo sooooo young and not fully learnt the art of "when to stop" yet, obviously when I have had a fair few more years experience like you guys I will be all fine;)

What a shame we didn't know this earlier. It was only because we old people thought you believed we all smelt of wee that we didn't invite you to our next v-flyer tea dance. Still, it's not too late - you can come along to our next one just so long as you learn all the words to "There'll be bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover".

Now where's my complan?

(BTW - I have a spare shovel here if yours is beginning to get old and knackered from all this digging)

My husband & I are due to fly Upper Class to LA in November. Never done this before. I was wondering if there is a dress code. My friends flew Quantas last year in their 1st class & had to wear smart casual. They were told no jeans, t shirts, trainers or shorts.

A bit late I know, but... I have flown QF a number of times in F and never adhered to any dress code I can assure you, other than my thong of course ;-) .

The only reason I can think of having a dress code is for staff tickets. Certainly on a flight on Concorde that a BA staff member organised for me about fifteen years ago it was made clear that I should dress smart casual.

The only other reason to dress smartly is to look like you blagged an upgrade.

Cheers, Howard

Certainly look forward to doing a social soon. Probably can't make the fly out in November though, but probably best I meet more people first :D.
