For younger children, our resident expert is mdvipond, and this thread from a little while ago gives some useful tips and hints.

I am sure if your children are older than some other members will be able to help, whatever class of travel the IFE will be the most useful way of keeping them entertained.

Alternatly if you cant be bothered to read that thread, he just throws M&M's across the cabin at her!![}:)]

How would the amenities of children traveling UC (excluding amenities provided as a guest of parents traveling UC or children in Y or PE) enhance the the enjoyment of the child?

Buns mentions IFE. IFE would be the same in all classes of service. A DVD player could be uses by people in Y and PE too.

Mrs B mentions that her children enjoy the food in UC and walking around. Can't get that in Y or PE. I imagine passengers can walk around the Y and PE cabins if in PE and Y if in Y. I do not know if there is currently a rule about staying in your ticketed cabin.

I just REALLY can't wrap my head around the theory that a child (especially a younger, under 10) journey can truly be enhanced and made more enjoyable by UC travel.

Ben, I'm not sure if it enhances the childs experience but I can say from first hand experiences it certainly enhances our own. It takes a lot of the hassle out of the airport and on board ritual. Dedicated and speedy check in, try queuing at LGW amongst the hoardes for 1 hr, dedicated security, easy with unruly hand glinders [:)], bottles etc. Relaxation in the clubhouse rather than standing in McDonalds. Kids being fed first before adults helps enormously on board and with space to move in. Try juggling 2 adult and 2 kids meal at the same time in a 31 inch seat pitch.... Do you want me to go on.

As mentioned numerous times before we are extremely fortunate to be able to travel in UC with the family, but it is our choice for long haul. Inter EU it is mostly Y.

We pay our money just like the next person sitting in the cabin!

Controversial [:0]

Ok, so hard working parents travelling with a little one & the ability to fund UC,even through mileage, must stay in PE/Y? Not that extra space & a bed (on an overnight flight)would help settle them. I'll dump our 3 yr old down next to someone in Y or PE (who's likely spent a much higher % of available income to travel and more to the point, their own money).

Behaviour is another issue, and there is no excuse for letting them run riot. However, kids are kids and will occasionally get upset/overtired.

Debates aside, hope all have a great New Year and look forward to 09, kids or not...[y]

I dont think that is what Ben meant by the comment, I think he was saying that to a child, who probably doesnt appreciate the extra legroom and the food and alcohol, is there really any way to maximise their enjoyment? Probably not. That is how I read his comments and not as a dig at children travelling in general. I am sure Ben can give his penneth worth.

Thanks,
Sarah

A much-beloved and well-known member of the aristocracy once remarked to me about children in UC: 'I do not wish to travel with little friends repeating rhymes, asking flippant questions, and talking in those nagging baby voices. Can't they just sit there and look out into the air? Isn't that enough?'

I offer this as dispassionate reportage and not as a statement of opinion.

As for the added benefit of UC to the child, I should think the proximity of their parents would bring greater senses of comfort and safety. My own decision would be to never travel without my child nearby. Doesn't anyone watch Jody Foster movies anymore?
