Unfortunately Phill, you can't use your miles on BA ;) (Good job VS' Business Class is probably on a par...:D)

(As a side-note, I've noticed that more and more US guys can't help but use the phrase First Class to identify Business on VS. I'm sure it comes from their use of "first class" when referring to our equivalent of business when flying domestically, but still find it weird.
The funny thing is that I've seen a hell of a lot of disappointed US passengers onboard, due to the same logic, that thought VS PE was their International Business Class product when they bought the tickets [:0])

How about what type of ticket do you usually fly on - Restricted, a little bit flexible or full-fare flexible? And does the class you are in (Econ, PE, UC) or who's paying (u for pleasure, work for business) change the ticket type?

Personally I always get the cheapest possible restricted fare, all my travel is personal so the only reason i would want to change or cancel a flight is because of something so important i wouldn't care about the money.

Me?..I have to pay for the ticket myself and being on a limited income i have to sit up at the rear end of the aircraft in 'cattle class'. I would love to sit a bit closer to the pointy end of the plane but the finances just will not stretch to that ...yet.
Though, after 5 flights Trans Atlantic, the points gained may just get me that seat in front of the wing so i can get that look at the front of an engine for a change.

Ok, you can stop with the violins now.

Jumping in a bit here, Tristar is the car service Virgin use for the limo transfers. You can book one with them directly yourself, and if in UC you can arrange a drive through check-in too.

Decker, what is tristar direct?

EGG

Tristar are the limo company used by VS for qualifying UC fares in the UK.

Decker's reference to 'book Tristar direct' was saying 'book directly with the company Tristar'.

Though I think I read somewhere here that you would no longer be able to use the drive through check in if you do this.

Yes, here it is

As a family with a disabled son we experienced PE in oct 2001 and have never looked back. Of course in those days with PE on the top floor we were lucky :Dand got the UC seats but PE service[:(] Now I am looking at the pointy bit with envy and we might just try it this year if I can pluck up the courage and spend the hard earned cash!

Is this not the reason that VS have to provide PE & UC on both floors?

This is beginning to feel like a 12 point meeting, "Hi, I'm RR and I'm a VS upgrade junky" :D but really it is that simple. Having flown VS Y only once in the past five years, (and it was, unfortunately, dreadful, my knees still cringe tenderly at the thought of being rammed by a reclined seat) I have convinced myself that I simply must fly PE or UC. And now of course,it seems UC (how could I do without the Clubhouse?) often wins out over common sense.
Am I not such a valuable employee that I "deserve" to arrive refreshed and well rested (and of course well fed, well wined and well spoilt)?

Having recently changed jobs, it will be interesting to see if my new employer agrees with my analysis of relative costs as related to my comfort level. Have noted that PE has slowly risen to be rather more costly than past (rare to see a "deal" on PE) so it seems rather thoughtful and of economic sense to pay for an S and upgrade to UC if the price is right, making UC affordable and always lovely.
As I always fly just under the radar to achieve gold (close but no cigar) I don't count on op ups and am always v grateful when they serendipitously arrive.

A little over three weeks until that next business flight...and already daydreaming about which chardonnays will be stocked, lobster and crab salad and sleeping soundly under a down duvet while zooming through the night five miles high.

Frankly, I see it as comparable to a mini vacation that gets me in just the right mind to be sharply "on" for work. Now, how to get that across to the new boss...[i]

Normally Economy, but twice there was no more room in Economy, and there was this nice lady at the check in desk who upgraded us to Premium Economy. [8D]
