Purely for some discussion ... was having a look around and discovered that MCO is going to be ready for the new airbus.

Assuming that the majority of us are correct in the assumption that Heathrow will eventually be a Virgin Airbus place and Gatwick a Virgin Boeing place, why has MCO been quick to get ready for the new bus.

Apart from Virgin and eventually BA, who else will have an A380 (Or indeed who else will need the capacity of an A380) that needs to fly into MCO

..... or are we all wrong with our thoughts [:?]

Just to be picky, there's no offical yes that BA will get the A380. But I think that airports that may not even see immediate A380 business would want to upgrade just so the airlines that fly there can have more options as to the metal they use. It helps the airlines and makes their relations with the airport better. MCO may have also done the upgrades because of possible cargo options.

You might be interested in this.

I think the reason would primarily be for MCO to make itself more attractive to the airlines, both existing and proespective. Also, as VS-EWR said, I'm sure there will be cargo airlines that will want to use the aircraft into the airport.

Just a note.

LAS will not be getting the A380.
The two runwats (27 r and 27l) that are long enough for this beast have a tunnel running under them,after test were conducted it was found that the tunnel could not support the weight of the aircraft and re-fitting it would not be cost effective.

However when the new airport opens it will be A 380 ready.

friad not,the county is planning on building a new airport outside of Las Vegas in what is now known as Jean.

Las is expected to max out with in the next 15 years and as it takes time to build something as large as a whole new airport it has already gone up for planning and enviromental permission.

Firstly - according to their own website they are 24th busiest airport in the world on pax.traffic.
Im sure there will be airports in strategic locations around the globe looking to install runways capable of taking the plane - afterall, with the pre-orders already known - the airports will have known which airlines will have the planes, how many etc - not to mention being able to have an educated guess as to the sort of business it could generate if they can take the plane (500+ of a captive audience!).
I for one am hoping plans for a new airport central to GLA & EDI go ahead & that they then have foresight to make it capable of taking the plane, before somewhere like MAN thinks its a good idea. Several years away at best though
As for MCO doing it - its certainly strategically located - not to mention it will now be able to attract every airline in the world which will have one (whether they already fly there or not).
For the airines - with Florida massive for tourism as well as business - the ability to have less flights , say 1 a day instead of 2, will generate far better economies of scale, improve profitability of routes & possibly even see customers benefit from better fares. Whilst the times might not suit some pax , the bulk wont mind too much - esp. if it also leads to slighty cheaper fares...
Maybe wont be much call for it within the US - but coast-to-coast is still longhaul

Further - ive read both FedEx & UPS have ordered planes - again, they have airport needs too & if airports they currently rely on wont be A380-enabled, they`ll need to find new centres that are!

Finally, if the funds are in place - surely better done now with an expected growth in air-pax. rather than wait 10 years & be forced into it, disrupting services & greater general upheaval!

Completely agree with that, which makes me a little worried about EWR's status. They are a big hub for both FedEx and UPS so I'm wondering if/when they will start some A380 improvements there. They did appear on that Airbus list that was put out.

You would have to figure that any airport that is a fedex/ups hub that would have A380's flying out/in to them would have being ready high on it's list of things to do.

Im sure Memphis will be ready along with Ted Stevens and even Ontario.
