Has anyone actually done a RTW using http://www.thegreatescapade.com ?

I am looking to do it in 2006 / 7 and would be very interested in anyone's experiences, tips or pitfalls.

It is the sort of trip that will take a LOT of planning and I would love to pull an English or GB cricket / rugby / soccer tour in at the same time.

Thanks

We did a business class Great Escapade last year -- it probably would have been cheaper via another alliance but the tier points and miles were the clincher. Booked through Trailfinders.

Routing was: LHR-LAX-SAN/TIJ-LMM/CUU-TIJ/SAN-LAX-SYD-HBA-MEL-SIN-HKG-LHR

(We bought cheap AA, JR and QF flights in US, Mexico and Oz).

Earned 22 tier points and around 40,000 FC miles (including the 25% bonus). Booked around 3 months in advance and had no trouble finding seats.

Works out to be a good solution for the US/AUS/NZ/SIN/HKG route but of course you end up paying extra for flights if you stray off the beaten track. We did our trip in just over three weeks but this is about the fastest you can do it sensibly. Worked out to be two long-ish holidays in Mexico and Tasmania, and a few days in Hong Kong.

Unfortunately the limited airlines on this ticket really do mean sticking to the main routes or else spending on additional flights. And there are really only a very few sensible routings (it would be tempting to take in JNB/CPT as well which you can do using VS/SQ but that's about it). We previously did a BA/QF explorer ticket which was great for US/Oz and are planning a *Alliance RTW for next year taking in Central America.

Anyway, feel free to ask any specific questions... it was great fun!

I'm considering doing a RTW using the Escpade ticket in November.

Remember you have the applicable taxes to pay on top of the fares that the online tool shows. VS themselves are happy to help out with routings and booking the Escapade ticket.

You can bolt on miles (1500 at a time) for another $100, which is what I will need to do as I'm looking at LHR-CPT-SIN-KUL-SIN-MEL-CHC-AKL-LAX-LAS-LAX-LHR

All on Escapade ticket apart from the LAX-LAS return which will be about £60 - might even throw in a First Class return trip KUL-SIN-KUL for some odd reason...

It will take some time to work out the whole thing though in regards to days, hotels etc as I'm limited on time too (1 month).

Thanks,
Richard

Well, you've got the Football World Cup in Germany (9th June - 9th July 2006), the Rugby Union World Cup in France (7th September - 20th October 2007) and the Cricket World Cup in the West Indies (2007, dates & actual hosting countries not announced yet). Unfortunately you'll miss the Rugby League World Cup cos that & the football European Championships are this year, so the next ones will be 2008 :)

Cheers

hi

i did a great escapade late last year:

lhr-del-sin-kul/pen-sin-bkk-sin-mel-sin-nrt-lax-lhr

bought the base level and purchased an extra 1000 miles to cover the last leg from lax-lhr otherwise would have run out of mileage somewhere over the eastern seaboard:D

the ticketing was fine, got us style luggage allowance ex lhr which was great! however had to keep reminding check in agents around the world that the ticket allowed two piece system. joined bmi flying club and got a free flight to europe and sliver status with all the mileage.

only flew virgin lhr-del/lax-lhr due to network routings and SQ for the rest, hence the multiple transits in sin[8)] did fly virigin blue in oz for a weekend trip to sydney ex mel.

I booked the ticket end of june for 1st week august departure and had no problems with availablity. in fact for my lax-lhr flight phoned virgin 3 hours before departure to ask to be shifted to next flight due to being stuck in traffic and was accommated with no fuss.

ticket was the least of my worries whilst trapising around the world, unlike other people i met whose airline office happend to be on the other side of the country! wherever you are there is bound to be an sq/vs/nz office nearby.

enjoy your trip.

Thanks gurmstar for the info. Can you say how long you spent overall on the trip? I have two months free this year, July and August, and have been thinking about doing something like this.

The problem seems to be with wanting to visit Bangkok - the only route out of there is to Singapore it seems, so i end up with that on the itinerary twice.

Any tips for planning RTW trips is greatly appreciated.

Just to add - the reason i'm interested in how long you spent on the trip is because i'm wondering what time of year you were in Australia - how is the weather in July/August?

hi onionz

i spent 11.2 weeks on my trip but it took discipline! if you want to do everything in a short period it is possible but there is none of this ohh i like this place lets stay an extra two days or staying in and watching telly...... i saw everything each major city had to offer, pertronas towers in kl, royal palace/temples in bangkok, shopping in singapore, whole of melbourne, opera house/bridge/blue mountains of syd, whole of tokyo, hollywood in la and alactraz/golden gate in san fran. i am not really a beach person so hence avoided places like langkawi, koh sumi etc all of these places can be reached on the ticket using silk air, a local se asia airline which is part of singapore airlines.

i spent the following times in the following places

del - 10 days
kul 4 days (far too much time, just shopping and the petronas towers!)
overnight to penang - then two days there
bkk 5 days
sin 3 days
mel - 6 weeks
syd bank holiday weekend
nrt 5 days, most fantastic time there, would have loved to stayed longer but lack of time and MONEY[:(] meant leaving tokyo.
lax - 10 days but also visited san francisco for 3.5 days (drove up took only 6 hours
then back to london

doing lots of short trips means the time difference is less so there is less jet lag. melbourne to tokyo is only 1 hr difference but a 16 hour flight!

you can fly/transit through singapore as many times you like but you can only stop off at singapore once on the trip. i visited singapore airport several times during my trip to transit but only cleared customs once to visit singapore. at one point i was at the airport at least once a week transiting! not many agents are clear about this, i can give you mine if you email me he was great.

the same is true for any hub, on the great escapade ticket that means singapore for sq/auckland for nz/london for vs.

main thing with doing a trip like this was to use the overnight/late night departures, saves on hotel costs for the night and means you can often go straight to the hotel, check in, drop off luggage and spend late afternoon/evening looking around going out.

australia in july august ummmm, melbourne is notorouis for its weather, locals referred to having 4 seasons in one day and that i completely agree with. i was in melbourne in late august/september saw the end of winter and the first day of spring and the weather was just like it has been here in london over the last two weeks. average 10-12c, cold nights with bursts of t shirt weather and barmy eveings to spend on the beach. the air con defintely went on and off during the day! the most weird day was waking to what seemed to be a hurricane force winds, leaving with sweater on then sitting outside for lunch in the golorious sunshine with t shirts having sushi, hailstorm in the afternoon and then it rained all evening........

hope the above helps any more queries then e me or post.

Gurmstar, RM, BC and everyone

Many, many thanks for all of that. The trip WILL happen, but it is going to take a lot of planning and I am hoping to utilise the expertise, experience and help of the people this board to help it all take shape.

Thanks

Gurmstar,

Thank you very much! That's given me plenty of ideas to go on, and pushed me one step nearer to planning this possibility.

I'm looking at doing much of the middle part of yuor trip, missing off DEL at the beginning and not spending too long in LA as i have already been there and SF (although i expect I would have to go through LAX on the way back)

Great advice on night flying to avoid hotel costs. Also, I was thinking Tokyo would be expensive, so i would be staying only briefly there. I might also be tempted to drop a few beach visits in, so the info on Silk Air is very useful - i don't see that mentioned on the site at all.

Did you have dates set in advance for every stop, and hotels already booked at each location?

I have BMI silver, so i think sticking every segment on that would be worthwhile, since i'd earn 25% bonus on it all, and probably make gold after the trip.

Hi

I had hotels prebooked on the web, got some cracking deals and most were what i expected. the only disappointment was when my room overlooked a beergarden on the 11th floor and i could still hear everything in bangkok!

if you are short on time then prebook, if you are only spending 2 - 3 days in a place you don't want to spend a day trapising around looking at hotels and seeing what is what. get lonley planet/rough guide to see where you should be staying and get hotels in the area.
you just have to accept that you will get what you pay for and be happy for it. on the plus side it means all you need to take is spending money.............

my most amazing buy was a hotel in tokyo. not on the recommended place i.e. on the circle line but in the middle of it at the tokyo dome. access to several tube lines within walking distance <5mins a five star hotel for the cost of a hostel. on the 26th floor with floor to ceiling windows and views to die for.(ok i was staying midweek and during when the dome had no events but the deal was great:D)

you should make gold, i re made silver on bmi when i left sin for mel.

You will have to go through lax/sfo/las at some point. the ticket conditions require you to cross the pacific and atlantic oceans, only once though. the ticket also requires to book dates before you leave lhr but date changes are free and very easy once you get going has i said earlier vs/sq/nz offices are everywhere almost.
the sq office in sin is very plush:). depending on what class you buy the ticket there should be seats available as the ticket is issued on a full fare basis. there is no need to reconfirm either also at any point once you have left lon.

just beware that crossing the pacific is always busy and will need to check availabilty even in first......

any further q just post
