Either Virgin America decided to change their color scheme, or, according the author, for some reason they cancelled this plane: http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1000489/M/

If you compare it to an earlier picture you can see that they painted over the red engines.

That's the base scheme, as from the factory. (As Paul says, the primer).

Yeah, but why did it used to be red? I can understand a primer, but usually they put the first coat over the primer! [xx(]

Are we sure of the sequence of the photographs? Did the photo with the read engines definately come before the photo after the red engines? If not maybe the aircraft left in primer and then had the engines painted?

I don't even know if this is possible but just a suggestion

The photo with the red engines was taken on Dec 13 2005 and the other one on Jan 27 2006

If you search for the registration on that plane, the engines have been many different colours! It once belonged to BA, if they are correct... then Air NZ, then Jetstar.

interesting... the plot thickens.....

No, that's because Airbus reuses test registrations for their aircraft...

the description underneath the photo says "F-WWDJ (cn 2616) Was previously for Virgin America."

Perhaps this plane is now destined for a different airline (Virgin America may have exchanged delivery slots with another carrier to suit the launch timetable?)
