Hi all,
I'm looking to book a week somewhere for the last week of August (from 22nd) as I have been given a holiday as a reward by my company(and I want to make use of the sale prices). I have two young boys 8/10 and looking at Virgin availability have a shortlist of the following:
1. SFO - but I've heard the weather isn't so good in August?
2. BGI - but this is a non-tier point or miles offer from MAN?
3. JFK - Not sure about this for youngsters
I've discounted MCO as we are going there for Easter and its hurricane season. My final option is Chicago but with the Dark Side.
I have £1800 as a budget for flights so any other suggestions would be appreciated.....

I vote SFO. Tons to do esp. if you rent a car. Yosemite, Murr Woods, etc. The weather is great IMHO, not too hot, not too cold in Aug.

As you seem not to want to go to MCO and let your boys see Mickey, why not go to LAX to see him?

Even better could be to fly into LAX, do a few days at Disney and then head up for a few days in SFO and fly home from there?
Plenty to do in both places to easily fill a few days up and keep the kids amused! Agree with Ben on Muir Woods for the kids, team it up a trip to Alcatraz (maybe stopping off for lunch in Sausalito beforehand for you) and everyone is happy!

I reckon the drive between LAX and SFO on Highway 1 is one of the best coastal drives in the world.... And awe the boys with a little earthquake education. I know I was totally engrossed in TV programs about the San Andreas Fault at that age, and even more impressed when I visited the region many years later.

My vote would be SFO too. Good weather that time of year and lots to see and do for the youngsters. You also have a lot to do outside of the city too.

My vote would be LAX for a few days and drive up to SFO and return from there.

I'm sure your boys would love riding the cable cars in Frisco.

Just keep in mind that the drive from LA to SF is about 8 hours depending what road you take. If you take highway 1 it will be much longer than that. Altough there are a lot of intresting place to stop along the way.
I would definately think about doing SF. August has pretty mild weather. I agree with muir woods, great place to explore with kids. Add Monterey, Santa Cruz, and possibly Mendocino to your list of places you might want to explore while in the SF Bay Area.

SFO without a doubt. Amazing city, lots to see and do - plus get out to see the redwoods at Muir Woods - this can be done on a day trip booked from Fisherman's Wharf if you do not have a hire car.
SFO is great because you can enjoy the city and the country - I also like the way there are little towns within the city like Japan Town, China Town, Haight Ashbury, Castro etc. Nothing is intimidating, there is a more laid back feel than LA, excellent shopping, a very entertaining modern art gallery with some Damien Hursts that will thrill kids... and the boat trip to Alcatraz is a lot of fun too.

San Fran hands down.
There's so much to do in and around the city.
I went early September and the weather was perfect.

If you are won over by the West coast - Why not add Vegas to the mix!!!
SFO - Hire car - Highway 1 - Mouse House - SW Dan Diego - Then NE to Vegas and the Canyon!!!!! [8D]
Good luck trying to work it out! Let us know what you decide upon. [y]

Took me 3 days! but I wasn't in any hurry, and the road was still being repaired after the washout of the "El nino" Winter at the end of the nineties (1998?)

Then take them to the Cheescake facory on the top floor of Macy's in SFO, and tell them they can't leave until they have finished their lunch/dinner! Sure HighFlyer will post that picture of me with the stupidest sized portion you will ever see!
Thanks,
Richard
