I'm about to book my first VA flight!!

I'm going to be travelling to sydney in sept, and thankfully virgin have given me the best rate for the 3 months I will be staying...

The question I have is, when I book it, it will add just over 21k in points to my account, can I then call them and ask for the upgrade or does it have to be based on points I already have when I'm booking the flight?

Sorry if this is really obvious but it's my first time booking with them! [:I]

The 21 k will not go into your account until you have flown the different legs.

IE,10500 mile go in after your LHR-SYD leg has been flown,it will take a few days to post to your account..

You could pay for the upgrade now and then use the miles collected to do so at a later date. If the ticket you have got is the cheapest, are you sure you are able to upgrade it?

Cheers,

Hi Belfastflyer,

If you are booking a lowest fare economy ticket, you probably won't be able to upgrade it. Check what fare class you have booked, you can do this by checking with your agent or contacting VS. If you have a N fare you cannot, you will need either a Y or an L fare to be able to upgrade. ;)

Hope this helps..........

As you use the site more you will learn the ways of the fare codes,out of everything on here they may well be the most important.

One thing to look at is the price difference between a N fare and an L,is it worth the savings of cash for the fact that you cannot upgrade?

These and other things are of course a personal thing that only you can make.

BelfastFlyer,

You might want to consider the costs before booking. In September (random date, 16th), here's the economy ticket breakdown to Sydney, all EXCLUDING taxes:

X = £603
M = £891
L = £1087
Y = £1696

Now, the only two of those tickets that can be upgraded (officially) using miles are the L and the Y fare. You will not be able to upgrade any of the outbound sectors using miles, as you only have 24% of the required miles before travelling on sector 1. On the inbound, that upgradeable ticket's going to double the cost of your travel...

The mileage upgrade to SYD (return) is 40k miles, remember - 10k miles PER SECTOR. You'll only have enough miles to upgrade ONE sector of your return journey even after getting there.

A K fare (lowest PE) is £1617.

Thanks for all your responses!

Just booked the x Fare, price is the main worry as I'm travelling around australia on a shoe string budget! At least the points will be useful when I have to visit my gf next years while she in in the US [}:)]

It amazes me though, that I still managed to book my flights (belfast to london, london to sydney for a cool £300 less than than come companies were quoting for travelling economy from london! :D

£735 in total. which I think is fair as it's a one stop flight (could get cheaper for 2 stops, but who wants the hassle!) and ofcourse it's with a trusted brand - virgin!

all I have to do is figure a way to pay for it all! [:o)]

Just one more quick question!

Before I booked my flight through the VA website, I was going to do it with lastminute.com and they gave me an option to buy access to the clubhouse at heathrow for £20. VA never gave me the option, and I'm slightly confused... does this mean I cant get into the VA clubhouse at all without paying the extra money? [:(]

Are you sure it was access to the VIRGIN Clubhouse, and not "Airport Lounge" access?

The two are VERY different, and LM.com offer ServisAir lounge access for around that much - not exactly the CH!
