Nice simple question for early Sunday Morning. I'm planning to do a "Great Escapade" next year for my 40th :D (Good to see the Web site is back up and running!). Seems that I can fit in all the destinations which ever way I travel around the world. So the question is which way to go, East to start at Dubai or West to LA. Does going in either direction have any more advantages/disadvantages than the other?

West is best you can fly with Air NZ to AKL via LAX

East. It'll probably be slightly cheaper too.

i would probably go west. through past expericnce of flying both west and east. going west for me is better because of time going backwards you get there at a better time (sometimes)

I thought the GE was a fixed price (as long as you didn't go over the 29000 mile limit)?

Yes it is fixed, been quoted around the £3700 figure (business class) + Taxes

In my experience, most people find going west much easier time-difference wise. On such a marathon journey, jet-lag management is very important and has to be a major consideration in your plans. If I were you, I'd go west to LA to start off with.:D

We did a round the world trip with Virgin Holidays in October/November 2004, and flew west via LA to Fiji/New Zealand/Australia and back via Dubai.

The downside of going west was losing a day of our hols (flying the wrong way over over the International Date Line). The plus side was flying with Air New Zealand for the first half of the trip. We flew Emirates for the Australia-Dubai-UK leg - not impressed...
