The rear admiral and I are with you on that one - she has boycotted FrenchCon for some years now. The sad thing is that this little show of consumer power probably only shows we are not their target customers. [n]

I boycotted Amercrombie and Fitch as they give unreal depictions on people (and mainly beacuse I prefer to buy clothes that do not have holes in them).

Ben, you are showing the true American in you. Clothes are so much cheaper in the US than the Uk, the noticeable (and highly funny) exception is the bizarre American quirks for British/english 'fashion' - I use that term loosely. You put me in any airport and I can spot your typical sheep Brit at 400 yards. They seem to want to pay even more than we do for French Connection and Ben Sherman garments. Goodness sake, the FrenCon joke is wearing very thin after 5+ years in circulation.

Be careful what thy say about my beloved A+F, I have several seasons of their clothes and love them. You are correct on the depictions though, the size tend to come up small (which is the inverse to the norm). They always have the pretty people working in sales their too. A+F is on the expensive side though for some.

Thanks,
Richard

Sarah,Sailor and Rear Admiral, glad to see I'm not the only one who now refuses to buy anything FC. Shame because they used to do some nice lines (many years ago when I was young and thin).
Sorry to be obtuse but can you please enlighten me memcbenjamin as to what an unreal depiction is?

My girlfriend works in the ragtrade, so as long as the material and workmanship passes her stringent QC I don't care what it says on the label, and it was a fraction of the price of the UK equivilent!

Walking around UK shops with her is a bit of an eye opener. A lot of the big brand labels are all made in the same faceless factory somewhere in china, it's just the designer label that gets changed!

for a bloke I like GUCCI,ARMANI,HUGO BOSS for smart casul wear ( if you know any other blokes with similar taste let me know[}:)]

Other than that M&S Italian range is suprisingly comfortable for travelling.

MMmmm amex platinum, I got one and its not the one I thought for all the travel perks, never mind low interest rate and balance transfer 4.9% for the life so still not a bad addition to the wallet.

GUCCI,ARMANI,HUGO - Now then Egg, your a nearly married man. This flerting is going to have to stop you know, especially flerting on a purely designer label basis. BTW, I happen to be involved with a boss sponsored sailing campagn - would you like to contribute?

I did wear A+F in the pre-hole days and have some shirts that I like from them. The company has shown a lot of growth over the last six years.

My main point with A+F is that I am not a jock-frat boy type. I do not fit there market segmentation but a good deal of people at MTSU do wear A+F. There sweaters are nice.

As to cost, A+F offers the Hollister line, cheaper but still more than American Eagle; assumably named after the city in CA. In the stores they have a live feed of video from long beach. They are nice but still there clothes come with holes. See I want the old style jeans and tan slacks without holes. I buy jeans at American Eagle or Old Navy. As for shirts, normally wear a semi-real French Lacoste shirt (as they are made in Peru) or a local T-Shirt. Most shirts I have now have oil stains from the damn Piper Arrow's dip stick.

DragonLady: Unreal dipiciton. Well Richard provided a link to the A+F site. There you can see how they promote there products. Honestly sex sells and that is great. But really, is real to think that someone will look like there models or for that matter there employees? I am short, normal build, and have strech marks from when I was fat but would like to look like the gentlemen in the A+F ads (in a strickly hetro way) and have a Paris Hilton girlfriend that they dipict but that "ain't goina' happen" as we say in the south. But if you walk in to a frat house here at MTSU, everybody wears A+F to be cool.

Richard: Will include A+F locations in my email to HF. BTW there is a huge FCUK store on Wisc. about one block from the Wisc. and M Street intersection in Georgetown, DC.

And hands up all those who have a shopping list of clothes for each time they go to the US...

Come on guys, surely I'm not the only one here with my hand up????:)

Thanks for the Hollister connection Ben. Have to admit I can't do A&F or FC. Funnily I do like Hollister - they have a good vibe tho' Mrs D isn't a fan of the stores themselves. I find Old Navy SCARILY cheap - as in - what conditions do the people who make these things live in?

Personally speaking I avoid FC and A&F, I agree with sarah that the FC group have used the same joke too long now (though do like the lastest advert I saw at the cinema the other day) . And as for A&F I refuse to shop there ! Many crew shop there and I think it should be VS Uniform stores !!

Though some of the girls working there are quite FIT... its worth just popping in with a english accent and flirting [:p]

Guilty as charged. I gave up shopping for clothes in the UK years ago. Still like Ralph Lauren stuff after many years. Classic and reliable to me!

Don't do quite so much these days though since I end up with great quality stuff that lasts. I have a wardrobe (or 2!) full of things.

Thanks for the clarification mcbenjamin.IMHO all the brands have unreal depiction.Even M+S (a British stalwart)has the lovely Tiggy leading their ad campaign-she looks as good now as she did 40 years ago and better than most women (of any age)ever will.
I can't get away with A+F either (vertically challenged with curves)and the style does nothing for me so i go in to look at the male assistants and then buy clothes that fit elsewhere.

I got 3 A+F jumpers whilst in NYC a few months ago. Lovely things as well with no holes etc and weren't too expensive.
I do tend my days lounging around on 60s beaches showing of my 6 pack as well ;)
Would be nice if they didn't design everything to have the sleeves rolled up though eg their shirts - sleeves come down to my knees which put me off buying more of their things.

Got a lovely black FC jumper as well - no FCUK written on the front either :) Just plain black and looks great :)

If you're into Asian looking girls, some real hotties in the NYC (Water Street) shop........Can't rememeber what they were like in San Francisco though.

If there's no holes in the jumpers, where do you put your head? ;)

Oh and why have a six pack when you can have a keg, I say :)

Thinking of myself as a rather young trendy man ;)I thought I may have an input into this rather intersting thread!

FC have used their marketing for way too long but it seems today that FC are going in two directions with their clothing; they have the gear without the FCUK written all across them, normally sold at a higher price and more akin to the stuff by other british designers like paul smith- then they have their FCUK range which is sold mainly in designer outlets and their high street stores to the "sheep". I have no problem in wearing the nice jeans or shirts without FCUK written on it- as do many celebs its seems- but i do draw the line at FCUK now very over rated and a tad chav like.

As for A+F....superb brand with its first UK store coming soon, i believe they are hitting Germany first. With regards to sizing i guess it depends on your height- at only 5ft7 i find there smaller sizes to long! Again they like FCUK produce some brilliant shirts and smart wear which generraly dont have A+F all over it-

People seem to complain about the attractiveness of people in the A+F- but its not only A+F....when was the last time you saw an "ugly" person in Gap or Zara? Indeed when was the last time you went to a decent restuarant and was served by an "ugly" person. These industries are well known to employ people on looks only. Maybe this says something about us as human beings? The fact that clearly we wont buy as many goods from less attractive people-

if anyone saw the programme 'beauty and the geek' last night on E4 they will know exaclty what i mean!

No nor do i hence the quote marks around the word. Stereotypically good looking people i guess is what they try to employ!

I would be lost without my BOSS casual/smart trousers, they are so comfortable, and really good for travelling in. I haven't ever found any in the US but i do stock up with polo shirts when i visit the US.

I looked in A&F last time in SFO and the store helper was very cute, but it was a bit collegey for me.

As for FC, the first year of the fcuk was clever but they need to reinvent themselves. They have become a victim of their own success a bit like Burberry in the (dare I say it) chav movement [:w][:w]
