Does anybody know why the model of A380 that is in production (ie the first commercial batch) is the A380-800 rather than something more logical like -100?
Thanks

How can such a step for aviation be both exciting yet scary at the same time?
Does anyone know if Airbus Industries have plans to showcase her at Farnborough Air show

They most likely will, Airbus usually showcases their newest aircraft there. I wouldn't be surprised if it appears in a VS livery either..

Thats interesting, if I was a betting man I'd say it would be in Airbus colours or Singapore.
Singapore are getting first delivery... Yet in a british airshow maybe like the 346 when Virgin had the slogan "my ones longer than yours" any suggestions? they will pull a stunt

The reason I say Virgin is based upon the history of the A380 tour. So far decals have been placed on the plane of airline that is based at the airport visited during the tour. If that persists then it makes sense VS will have theirs put on for Farnborough. I'm guessing the tail slogan will be something like, "Mine's Bigger Than Yours", "Bigger is Better", or "Large and in Charge".

Well there is nothing official yet but if the very strong rumours in the company are to be believed you may not be seeing an A380 in Virgin colours AT ALL!

That wouldn't surprise me to be honest. How many airports are A380 ready?

Nothing to do with airports more the manufacturer. Like I say, purely rumour at the moment but quite a prevalent one at the moment.

In that case I refer the right honourable gentleman to my cynical comment here:

They do seem to be "slipping" on the roll out dates. In know VS knocked the date they wanted them back to 2008 and they have the option to convert the order to -600's if they wish. As much as i would like to see the A380 in VS colours i just dont think it makes sense for them to operate them for the routes they have, possibly for JFK or MCO but even then they have poured cash in to the suite and vport for a lot of planes and do they really want to replace them just because they have ordered the 380's??

It would be kinda nice to see some 747-800's on order [:I]

Untrue. When the a380 went to FRA no decals were placed on the aircraft at all even though LH has a380s on order. I'd say it would be in airbus colours at Farnborough. Its would make more sence to have VS decals or tiltes on the A380 when it arrives in LHR in April (i think).

That's because it wasn't part of the recent two tours, that was just a showy thing for the workers and their familes at the Airbus plant.
I guess I'd be a little disapointed about VS not getting the A380, but I think I would rather them get some 777s, 787s, or 350s. The 340s are good, but I want to see some other widebodies in their fleet. A 748 would be good, as someone mentioned.

The plane actually went to FRA to test the new gates there to make sure that they were a380 accesable. The Airbus plant is located in Hamburg which is in northern Germany where as FRA is in the west/middle part of Germany. If they wanted to send the a380 to germany for the employees then they would have sent it to Hamburg.
Also the a380 to Germany was the 1st country outside of France to get the plane to land there. The visit actually unoffically started the A380s world tour as a few weeks after the german visit, the a380 went off to Asia

I think we are talking about two different flights then, because the a380 definitely visited the Airbus Germany Plant.

F-WWDDwent to Frankfurt
F-WWOW was due to go but had engine problems at the time.
And
F-WXXLWent to Hamburg.
But both outings were at the end of Oct so guess easy to get mixed up.

The mystery is solved!
I still think the A380 will appear in VS colors at farny or at the LHR testing, however if VS cancels A380 orders that won't happen.
