Refund question

A quick one for the experts and sorry if it has already been answered before.
I have a super cheap PE ticklet that I need to change and I am resigned to having to write it off as it is totaly inflexible and re-booking another cheapie costs less than converting it to a full W ticket.
The question is this: should any portion of the ticket (e.g taxes, surcharges etc.) be refundable? Out of the £733 paid, only £592 is actually the 'fare' and it doesn't seem right that I pay tax on a ticket I don't use. Any expert knowledge appreciated!

Yes it is, but there is normally an admin charge to reclaim the taxes. It would be worth discussing the options with VS.

If it is a 'super-cheapie' that is non-changeable then yes you can recliam your taxes. Call VS to do this - unlike some thieving airlines such as BA there is no fee for making this claim.
It does take a while for the refund to be processed though.
Thanks,
Richard

Thanks. I have spoken to Virgin who confirm exactly what you say (including the bit about the refund taking a while). I am impressed - I was expecting to have to fight for it!

I have a similar issue with an N class ticket booked through AMEX travel. I might not need to use it due to possibly being on business in that part of the world at the time.
So, if I read the above correctly I should be able to get the tax refunded. Though I guess that since I booked through a TA then it is them I need to go back to for the refund... and why do I have a sneaky suspicion they will charge admin! [V]
On a related issue. I like to think of myself as a polite and helpful kind of chap, so I feel that if I'm not going to use a ticket for a flight virgin is expecting me to turn up for, I should phone them and tell them... Just to be polite! But does it really matter?
And I suppose if they are expecting Econ to be full, it might increase someones chances of an OP UP from econ if they are still expecting me to turn up!
{Note to mods: Success! I was about to post with that dreaded opener "I'm sure this has been asked before", but i resisted and found this suitable thread using the search tool[ii]}
