US Congress Nervous Over Foreign Airline Ownership

Hot on the heels of the Dubai port debate the Congress is now debating whether to permit foreign investors to have a say in the management of US airlines. Stay tuned, as this may impact Virgin America, even if it wasn't the intended target (something tells me that it could have been, however).

Anyone who likes to keep current on Congress, please keep us posted.

Thanks!

It's so stupid though, when you analyze Virgin America the only things that are actually foreign are the "Virgin" name rights and some of the money coming from Virgin. There is no foreign ownership in Virgin America at all. I swear if congress attempts to do something about it I'm going to write a letter to my congressman.

Im sure with some US style Airline management in place Virgin America will soon be mired in the traditional labour disputes and chapter 11 filings that most US Airlines seem to cycle in and out of every few years (except the well run low cost carriers).

If there is one US based industry (except perhaps Steel) that really needs an infusion of new blood and new thinking on a massive scale it is the US Airline industry.

It wouldnt surprise me to see this issue end up on the Protectionists to-do list though. Of course its not as much of a tinder box as the UAE port deal as it isnt as if Virgin is from the middle east but it wouldnt hurt many congressmen (or women) to be seen to be looking after the US Airline Industry by keeping out foreign companies.

Protectionism is one of those things, we know it doesnt work, the politicos know it doesnt work, the media know it doesnt work but boy can it win votes.
