End of Carlos

I don't know if this should be a separate topic or added on to the other discussion (over to you, MODS), but...

I'm not sure if there are any avid readers out there, but Carlos is being scrapped from 14th April. Apparently, it has had "minimal readership" so is being withdrawn. Virgin will take the opportunity to review the print media offered in the Upper Class cabin.

So will the demise of Carlos be mourned or cheered?

Ah - hence the observation from yesteday's flight ;).

For me, cheered - what a waste of money in the first place.

Yep, waste of money. In the olden days (cue Jimi Hendrix etc.) the area near the UC bar used to be well stocked with decent magazines. These days a rat eared copy of a tabloid newspaper is about all you seem to get. So perhaps VS can use the money saved on Carlos to reinstate 10 copies each of Top Gear, Car, GQ, Cosmo, CondŽ Nast Traveller and so on.

I certainly won't miss it. Pretentious twaddle sums up the vast majority of its content.

It is completely out of step with the Virgin brand image, and VS could do SO much better. ... just my 2 cents. [}:)][}:)]

Even a "Virgin News" newspaper-style item would be better from my perspective. ie: What's going on @ Virgin? etc...

I actually got to the point during my flight in February of reading the MENU, as it was more interesting than Carlos [ii]

Also liked it, sometimes interesting, often funny, and a bold attempt to do something different to the standard BA/AA etc. business man magazine ... let's hope Virgin have something good up their sleeve and I would also welcome back the selection of papers and magazines by the bar.

I think I have been caught in the past referring to it as "Islington poserur-babble that was only slightly more pretentious than it was uninteligable", or something like that. So you will not be surprised to to hear me say [y].

Sorry - I'm in the "pretentious twaddle camp". Bring back GQ, Top Gear, The Economist, Newsweek...

Oh, and make sure there are enough of them in the CH for me to pinch as well...

Are you telling me that there are no decent newspapers and quality magazines in UC?[:0]

There are plenty in Travel City Direct Sunshine First!! Will have to rethink my travel plans!;)

I'm a little confused about the magazine issue. I didnt look on my UC SYD flights earlier this year, but there were definately magazines avaialble on the bar (pre departure) last May when I went Upper to MCO

Are they stilll there or not [?]

I kinda liked it. It was a little... different to the usual 'your a business traveller so all you want to read about are gadgets and hotels' waffle you get other airlines.... say BA (refering to the copy of "Business Traveller Magazine" I picked up on my flight to Munich recently)

I'm with Nick--in terms of Carlos as pretentious twaddle, and I say that from the additional point of a woman's view of a male mag. I actually think VS could come up with a fabulous in flight mag--something that would outshine every other everyday in flight mag--simply by focusing on what people on airplanes are interested in: travel. I'm already amusing myself with a list of high interest feature articles--and would bet that V Flyers could add to that immeasurably.
What would you like to have featured in an in flight VS mag?

Despite having travelled UC on over a dozen or so times, over 6 / 7 years I have never been offered or seen such a copy, the enigma only being talked about on this forum leaves me to wonder what I have missed....

I like Carlos often didnt read it on the flight but was good to dip into at other times. Wouldnt pay for it though. I was looking forward to getting another copy on Wednesday.
Please if there is a magazine review lets have something different from Top Gear!

The new replacement I've seen for Carlos is really really nice.
But I liked it all the same.

What replacement, Jonathan?

They didn't have any replacement on Thursday's VS19... [:?]

Carlos is dead-long live Carlos!Hoo bleeding rah- what a load of pretentious clap trap (as staded in numerous reports earlier).Absolute waste of space-FWIW there are women who sit at ther front of the plane (or upstairs in that nice bit) too and who find Carlos a tad chauvenistic(and tres boring) to say the least!Long overdue for the cull!!

It's not out yet, I've just seen some proofs for ads - and it looks excellent.

For those who have not come across Carlos, you can get yourself a copy for £4.50. See this page on the VS web site. Not sure how much longer it will be available though.
