First Post - at last I've joined!

Now where on earth do I put this? Is there a forum for first posts?

After a lifetime of decision making in a fairly demanding job it’s only right that in retirement procrastination should become an art form and in my naivety I generously thought Virgin Atlantic had a fleet of 747's, which we were quite happy to fly in splendid isolation using PE on the upper deck. What a rude awakening returning home from Washington in November to be allocated 2 centre seats despite using OLCI - changed on check in thank goodness - on an A343.

That experience led me to this site to research the fleet and, several months later, I think I should sign up in order to become a member and contribute to the running costs. All I ask is that MsLiz and I are not referred to as the bucket and spade brigade, which apart from being deeply offensive is condescending in the extreme. You all know that the TSA do not allow buckets or spades on flights!

Following an appalling experience with BA flying to Orlando, and a worse one with Lufthansa to Bangkok, there was no long haul for several years until we found a deal with VS to San Francisco in Feb 2004 and flew out in economy. That was OK, as the flight was almost empty, and we stretched out over 4 seats. However we took the opportunity to research PE, liked what we saw, and on the return flight upgraded, as a BA flight had gone technical and there was standing room only in the rear quarters. Since then we usually fly VS, always in PE, and have reached the dizzy heights of FC Silver.

Being a cynic I sometimes think our obsession with FC miles is playing into Virgin’s hands. The FC is there to maintain customer loyalty, and it certainly does that. Using a Virgin CC as well I have accumulated more than 120,000 miles and MsLiz 75,000 - but what use are they when there never seems to be reward availability? I also have a companion ticket, but it’s not cost effective to use, except perhaps in S, and will probably expire before I use it.

FC Silver provides an 0845 number to VS and a few extra miles, but otherwise is of little benefit. OK it’s easy to retain, looks nice on the carry-on, and gives a few extra miles but not much else. That’s why this site is so useful as informed choices can be made from the in-depth information provided by experts like Messrs Harris, Sailor, Mannion, Reiffer et al, despite the almost compulsory use of acronyms.

Finally I am lucky never having had a desk job, and while I can understand the ease with which posts can be made when sitting at work in front of a computer all day, for me it’s more difficult as retirement brings an increased work load, and after this missive I'll probably need a rest.

Colin,
First of all let me join the others in welcoming you to V-Flyer.
Your post for a first was a good un!!

I agree that as a PE traveller the most obvious silver benefit (PE checkin for any flight) is negated anyway!

but the few extra miles you speak of (25%) is what us golds used to get so things are getting better.

And finally whilst Ag isnt quite the same league as Au, its still miles better than being a red. (or not even a FC member)

Using my Silver card a few years back I got op-upd from PE to UC on a JFK-LHR Flight. Ok it wont happen as often as being an Gold but it does happen!

Thanks again for a great first post and keep them comming!

Great first post and welcome.

All I ask is that MsLiz and I are not referred to as the bucket and spade brigade

As a not b&s'r I know this is meant to be fun but also find it strangely condescending ...

as retirement brings an increased work load, and after this missive I'll probably need a rest

That's what I fear, I'm working till they put me in a shroud!

Personally I have no problem being thought of as a bucket and spader (and the site welcomes all us VS afficionados) as essentially all my travel is for pleasure/leisure (the cash strapped NHS don't indulge very often in business travel).Don't know that I've had need of a bucket or spade in some of the places VS has transported me to though....I prefer the V-flyer tag on my luggage to the FC tag though.

Thank you for that Colin and welcome to V-Flyer, it will go down as one of the best opening posts if not the best! [y]

I look forward to your contributions in the future especially your TRs (compulsory acronym inserted to avoid reader disappointment :)) and hope that even with your increased workload in retirement, you will find the time to enjoy the site.

Thanks for a great first post - I am sorry for all the acronyms! If you (or anyone for that matter) doesn't recoginse an acronym that is used, then please let us know and we will be quick to enlighten.

Glad you find the site useful, and a big thank you for also joining the site with a paid membership, it all helps towards the growing running costs - hope to meet you and MsLiz soon on one of our social outings (you will find details in the members area).

Thanks,
Richard

P.S You may want to update your profile, as I'm not sure you can retire at 13! :)

Great first post Colin.

All my VS flights are B&S or if v-flyer decide to large it up somewhere nice I may splash out. I take it as just an affectionate term:)

Great to have you on board.

Be warned it becomes addictive......just look at Gatorbaitor :D

Colin,
Welcome aboard. You will become accustomed to our various acronyms -- well, most of them; a few may require some additional "decoding" -- and we will hopefully have the honor of enjoying many more of your excellent posts.

Best regards,
Chuck-

Oh, just in case anyone's forgetting, the Glossary does contain a whole load of acronyms that are in fairly regular use here ;)

Cheers
