Upgrade Flights

I'm looking to book an upgrade flight from Econ to PE using miles for next May (lhr-jfk, returning iad-lhr)
Two Questions both related to once the booking has been confirmed:

1) Can I use the "manage your flights" section on the Virgin web site to do the usual things ie. Change my seat ?

2) If, as the date approaches the flight becomes oversold can I be downgraded to my original Economy seat and if so how likely is this to happen?

Question 1... Yes you can.. at least I did when I upgraded with miles from Y to UC.

Question 2... Always the possibility, but I guess its the same possibility for those that have brought the oversold cabins ticket. Check-in online before... and get to the airport early to ensure this doesnt happen I would say. Someone may have a better opinion.

Hope this helps!

It's worked for me when I've paid for an upgrade way after making the initial booking.

I'm considering using miles for the same reason. Question: would this incur a charge for changing the booking??

Not if you are already on an up-gradable fare. If you first need to upgrade to an up-gradable fare with cash, then yes you will have to pay a change fee.
