Upgrades and Tier points

I am booked LHR to IAD on Sat with a Y ticket. I have just realised as I am only 8 points from Au that if I was PE one way and UC the other leg I would make Au. So the questions are:

If tried for an upgrade at the airport would I get the tier points?
If I upgraded with miles I wouldn't get the tier points?

I suppose the other question is it worth dipping into my own pocket to reach Au?

I see from searching the forums it may be cheaper to do the upgrade at the airport. I know it is all down to availability/numbers on the day but wanted to be prepared. I usually pay for the extra leg room seats (grudgingly) so that is a percentage reduction.

Do I ask for the price of the upgrade at the check-in desk or the ticket desk?

Thanks
Chris

Hi Kriscii,

Firstly the only way that you will get those 8 Tier points is to pay for them. If you upgraded by miles or if you were selected by VS for an op-up you would only recieve miles and tier points for your original Y paid fare.

If it were me I would call VS and see what your options are before you get to T3. In my limited experience I have been offered Y-J upgrades on the day to the east coast for £500-£700. The best way to enquire on the day is to go straight to the ticket desk, rather than at a check-in desk.

I would ask yourself the question - What you will gain from the benefits of achieving Au status??? Look at your travel plans for the next 12-13 months and make the decision based on whether you will use most of the extra perks that Gold offers. :D

All the best.... [y]

Thanks for the info.

Being sensible about it I would be better off just booking a cheap return to get to Au. Get an personal trip rather than upgrading for the sake of it. I might find out the cost of PE as opposed to an exit row though.

You might get lucky on the day and find one of the £200 upgrades that have been banded around here for Y - PE.

If you are planning on buying an exit row then it's not a great deal more I suppose. Good luck with what you choose...:)
