Will we be allowed to purchase any duty free. I know we are not allowed drink or perfumes, but what about cigarettes/make-up/books etc.

I really dont think they will be stopping selling Duty Free. I know on the Manchester Airport website it says Duty Free is running as Normal, and i know someone that works with scanning all duty free from landside to airside & other people on here have said that its one of BAA's main revenues!
I dont think you'll have a problem buying Duty Free![y]

Sorry I forgot to add. Once your past security at the airport you cant take any of 'your own' drinks. However BAA gets DHL/Excel to scan all produce through to the airport under their supervision so all items are safe and nothing 'harmful' or 'explosive' could get landside!

Even though I am flying to the States, you think they will still allow it.

Should be OK on all apart from Liquids.

I would be interested to know how, as I am unaware of a way to screen sealed bottles of liquid for explosive properties. I would imagine that most spirits are fairly explosive anyway.

You must have seen the way they swab check your bags for explosive which seems to heavily rely on exposure of material to an explosive compound.

Does anyone think this is slightly Die Hard 3 'esque' with explosive liquids!? I thought you needed some density to explosives.

ps. I am not trying to engage a conversation about what does and does not make a valid explosive - I also want to ensure that we do NOT discuss any issues that could jeopardise security so if this post is moderated or deleted I do understand.

Once again - if this is wrong then someone please delete - but theres plenty of info about the type of materials used on the internet - and as an example one easily available site from BBC news says - "For example, a liquid hydrocarbon fuel could pass as mineral water"

It also says that x-rays would not pick this up as anything untoward - hence the reason why no liquids are being allowed on board!!

From UK departing airports. Other airport worlwide have different measures and liquids are allowed on board.

I'm really not sure how taking duty-free on board squares with what we're allowed to take. The prescribed list is just that - but yes, what does happen if you buy anything after security? If you buy War and Peace - are you expected to have read it before boarding, so you can discard it???

I refer you to my earlier answer:"Should be all OK apart from liquids". In otherwords, yes apart from liquids.

If you were not going to the US then the answer would simply be yes.

Seems to me those who sponsor duty-free will be bankrupt quickly without the ability to sell alcoholic beverages and perfumes! I know that's not all they advertised and sold, but I'll bet it comprised the major amount of sales.

You would think that they would take a page out of the US book and let you buy wet duty free. But hand it to you when you board the aircraft at the air bridge.

Good suggestion today from a US friend. Buy in the UK pick up from Galleria in the US and vice versa... (as in they should change their systems so we can)

Books and "dry" duty free goods, such as cigarettes and electrical items, purchased airside i.e. after the airport central security point, are permitted in their original sealed packaging, with proof of purchase. No liquids, gels, lotions of any description are permitted, regardless of where purchased.

I like the Australian idea. Because they are so tight about what you can bring into their country, they have duty free shops before you get to Customs on the way in.

Silly question (or perhaps not) - we are off to Vancouver next Friday. Would the USA ban ofalcoholic duty free apply to Canada, or is it literally just the USA?

I wish, unfortunately the EU in their wisdom forbid this, unless you are a an EU deligate/MP, based in brussels/Salsberg or UN, who keep their duty free status....b******s, and can buy in their own DF shop in their offices within the EU.
